Question about 1999 Ford Expedition

Engine makes a noise.

My 99 5.4L V8 has starting making a "put-putt" sound. sounds like a diesel engine kind of. there is no smell except at start and it still drives OK except for the loud noise. the noise sounds like it is coming from the rear of the front part of the engine (where IAC valve) and spark plugs are.

I have the identical truck. They had defective exhaust manifolds and had sparkplugs which could loosen up. The metal in the exhaust gasket and the metal exhaust manifold start out with an initial noise which becomes less when the engine produces heat making the metal swell and close the gaps. As things get worse the gaps stay open.

The bolts that hold the exhaust manifolds on the engine will fail. They need to be drilled out of the heads and replaced as well as many of the manifolds warp or crack.

The repair takes skill or you will trash the cylinder head. A cheap price per side is at least $600 on one side to $400 for the other. The price difference is due to the amount of time difference needed to get at the parts. You will need a bolt kit for each side. Many mechanics use a 90 degree drill, a cable drill drive, or dremmel to remove the old broken bolts from the heads. Punch through a water or oil passage and the head is done. A heli-coil can only do so much.

I suggest doing a Web search for repairing or replacing the exhaust manifolds on this engine. You tube has several.on this subject. It may be easier to pull the engine and do the drilling and replacement of the exhaust.

Also be careful because there were 4 exhaust systems for the V-8 alone. There were 2 automatic transmissions in 1999 and each had a separate crossover for 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive. There was also a running change in wheel stud thickness depending on production date.

I hope this is helpful, there was a recall, but I did not drive much so my failure was years after the recall.

The IAC wouldn't cause a noise like you describe, and as for the spark plugs, it is possible but only if the plug broke off, or blew out of the engine. You say engine is running OK but a V8 can do that on 7 cylinders. Also you may be describing the beginning of a piston rod knock. You will need to check further. Good Luck Friend

Is this an"E"or an "X" engine code? 8th diget in the vehicle identification tag, title. The designated code generally will fit that same code for all the years that it was produced.

VW Touran very strong diesel smell

Normal a dripping injector makes a knocking noise when you first start up. To me it sounds like a leek. Try looking at the pipes any were above the exhaust or turbo. For the smell to come in to the car the leek will probably be at the front. I'm only guessing here. But I had the same thing on my range rover and it was a joint in the fule pipe spraying on to the block..Good luck

Engine makes noise when starting and shutting off for a short time

Your car or truck engine can make a number of different kinds of sounds when it is shut off. The most common is a ticking or pinging sound from the catalytic converter because it is cooling down.

98 lincoln navigator loud noise, shaking, high rpm at idle, drive

I don't know how much oil you had to put in but it sounds like you have maybe more than opne issue and both sound major. One is engine reving and speed not picking up sounds like trans problem. Two the engine shaking and making noise and being run low on oil leans toward possible engine damage. If your mechanicly inclined check all fluids and when checking trans fluid smell it. If it smells burnt the trans has been damaged. Check oil pressure and make sure coolant is full. You may have to take it into the shop.

Takes a long time to start, when started it putts.

distributer cap and button are weak it sounds like
put the screw driver in the spark plug boot. close to a ground
make sure its not aluminum.
turn the engine over when its somewhat dark
look for the intensity of the spark.
if the sparks bright then its strong IE if the sparks not strong means its the coil that needs to be replaced.or the wires
More then likely its the cap button or plug wires..
if there is any cracks in the wires they will leak power out.. making it use more gas to make it run.
