Have 2001 durango and I had to go from the inside out to get open, unlock all doors and push from inside while somepulls from outside. once open spray with WD-40 or grafite. Clean lock hook with steel brush to remove **** build up.

The door switch isn't being pushed in far enough when the hatch is closed. The wire going to that switch may be shorted to the body somewhere, too.

That might get a little dicey. This sounds like a very good time to disassemble the interior panel on that back hatch and get it to open, even if only from the inside.

Dodge rear hatch
This is a common issue with this make and model. From the inside of the cab, you can loosen the plastic trim on the hatch at the bottom and reach in and locate the rod that connects to the actuator. You should be able to pull that and open the hatch.
