have a shop test the service engine soon light for codes. its either low on coolant or the thermostat is sticking.

what does the pressure rise too? Its normal to rise somewhat. I dont think the Service Engine soon light is related to the oil gauge operation.

The service engine light is the check engine light. Different name for the same thing.

Have you tried replacing the overflow tank cap. These don't hold pressure as it should which will cause the temp to rise. EX: the cap rating is 15psi, and the cap has a defect which only allows the cap to hold 10-12psi. That water has to be pressurized by the cap for the water not to flow out. Also, does the temp gauge reach a high level or just the temp light comes on. This will give a better idea of the problem. If the gauge is normal but the light is on, sounds like a temperature switch is bad.

the light means there is a problem in he vehicle (not the engine) this could be like a bad bulb, abs unit airbag, gas gauge, tire pressure. scan the body contol module should tell you why the light is on.

I have a 88 and mine done the same thing. I recently had the central power supply rebuilt at a shop in Minnesota and the problem is fixed. After driving the car for 2 years with no working gauges, lights or heat. I now have lights, heat and air!!! I now love my caddy!

Try resetting your odometer cluster. Without knowin what kind of vehicle it is but some can be reset by pressin the trip meter down and havin the key in ignition in the on position (not running)

P1299 Cylinder head over temperature protection active.

I would want to know why this is overheating. It could be a fuel issue, timing is too advanced (due to faulty sensors) or just a duff temperature sensor itself.

Needs investigation though as performance will be affected.
