The spare tire support cable has an additional safety mechanism prevents the spare tire from falling onto the road should the cable break. This mechanism often gets filled up with road grit and won't release properly when you try and lower the spare. If your spare comes down a few inches then won't go any further then this is your problem. There should be some tin brackets included with your jack that are supposed to hold the spare tire up slightly off of the ground to allow some slack in the cable which usually [but not always] will allow the stuck mechanism to come loose. There is a more detailed description of this procedure in the owners manual. IF the spare won't move at all or the mechanism just won't release no matter what you do then you may have to have the entire spare support mechanism replaced.

2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Nevada Edition. Spare will not lower. Cable lowers but tire stays put at about 3"

the cable lowers all the way through the tire and makes it to the ground?
The tire must be stuck on something, try to get up under there and see whats going on.

hope you figure it out.

Happy trails.

I have a 2009 gmc sierra 1500 and I believe my fuel pump relay is bad, however, I can't seem to locate it on my truck. Could you please help?

I think it is located on the firewall on the passenger side of the vehicle. It is directly below thae passengerside windshield wiper. Look for a plasctic cover with writing on the top such as "Power block" or "Fuel pump relay" or "Fuel pump Fuse

Do the new Sierra 1500 trucks 2007-2010 have a full size spare tire?

Yes. The spare tire is located under the bed in the rear of the vehicle. You have to use the handle of the jack to lower it down. There is a place in the bumper next to the License plate that you stick the jack handle in to lower the tire down.

Spare tire removal 2003 gmc sierra how to release secondary latch? owners manual is no help. cable comes down spare comes down about 3 inchs thats all

You must unwind (counter clockwise) with the tire tools that come with the truck, sometimes the cable gets jammed on the spool it may take 2 people to get it loose, one must pull down on the spare while the other unwinds it. Try not to get under the tire as it is heavy.

Spare tire is stuck, will not release

The crank mechanism gets very little attention but should be lubed from time to time but few people do and then this is what happens. To get the spare off without letting it down first is tricky and dangerous if your alone but with help and by going carefully, undo the anchor from the rim by pry it down with a bar until you can get the whole thing to move at least 2" from the truick bed,at this time the cable may break so don,t lay under it.Once it has come down the 2 or so inches push the tire and rim back up to slacken the cable then feed the hanger to the inside of the rim,now at any point the rim will fall off the truck so extra hands are needed to lower it to the ground.

Spare tire will not lower . The spare Tire on my 2003 GMC Envoy XL has never been used and I can not lower it.

if it cant be lowered, the mechanism is bad or siezed. you will need to cut the cable and then replace the mechanism.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 cant remove spare tire

The safety clamp is seized. It is on the cable just above the cups that hold the tire rim up. My mechanic had to torch the cable to get it off. If you can release the tension on the cable (support the spare while lowering the crank you may be able to get the clamp to release. If not, cut the cable above the clamp and you will still have enough cable length to bolt the cup back on. The owner's manual details this procedure. ( GM must know it does not release properly)
