I've got a 96 Mercury Mystique, it over heats big time. I changed the water pump and thermostat and no change yet, so i took the thermostat right out to see if that would make a difference, but still the same. I'm not sure what i should do next, line up a tree or is there another solution.

Is there white smoke coming out of the exhaust? If so either blown head gasket, crack in cylinder head or crack in engine block. If you line up the tree make a note to not buy another mystique I found them to be troublesome once they start giving trouble.

I want to add another possibility, feel the radiator hoses if one feels soft it may be collapsing and that would cause heating of course. Leave the thermostat in the engine needs to run at 190 or so to run efficiently.

Have your radiator cleaned up or overhaul it, it maybe has clogging or full of dirt, sometimes the gasket maker causes the clogging of the tubes in the radiator...

may be you should make a diagnostic and you can do it in a garage or you can do it by yourself if you want to do it by yourself you need some tools and you can find some good ones here: diyobd2.fr

My heat is not working in my mercury mystique 98 but it blows out cold air

If the coolant temp gauge is in it;s usual position when driving(at least 1/3 way up) then flush the heater core with a garden hose.Clamp off the heater hoses, remove them from the heater core and flush back and forth a few times until flow is good, reattach heater hoses and you should have heat as long as the heat/cold airflow door is in the heat position in the heater assembly under the dash.

Do you need to replace the timing belt when you change a water pump for a 1998 mercury mystique v6?

You don't have to replace it but you have to take the belt off to remove the water pump for the extra $30.00 i would recomend changing the belt too, unless the belt has been changed less then 20,000 miles ago .

My mercury mystique is over heating when driving slow and stopping or yeilding but now when going long distance and fast speed

The fan clutch is not engaging and turning fast enough. I would have it check by a mechanic for the fan clutch, thermostat, and coolant flow from the water pump
