The coolant temperature switch and fan control switch are located sie by side, mounted in the steel portion of the heater hose that runs from the thermostat housing to the firewall, it is underneath the air intake tube and the ignition coil pack, mounted to the back of the cylinder head. Either drain out some coolant or be very quick, and you can unplug and unscrew each switch from the hose and replace it with a new one. Make sure the engine is cold. After replacing make sure to check the coolant level add as neccessary. The single wire connector switch is for the guage, and the other is for fan control. Hope this helps, let me know.

94 escort LX wagon 1.9L... (180,000k miles). Fan works with diagnose jump (STI to EEC), doesn't work under normal running (near overheat,etc..). Cat Conv going bad ("check engine" light 'smells funny'),...

As your diagnostic flow chart will tell you now you need to test the coolant sensor(3 wires sensor in water jacket screwed into steal pipe near intake manifold) Most likely out of range. If the first part of your pinpoint test had failed then there might be a possibility of and open inside the pcm but since it passed the first test then I don't think they are a related concern.

1995 Ford Escort LX Wagon 1.9 Liter. 173K Loud Vibration

Is the engine running on all four cylinders, no missfire? If so, check the engine and transmission mounts, there are four, one at the top right hand side, one at the top of transmission on the left hand side, and one on front of transmission bell housing, and one in the rear transmission bell housing, any of them that are bad can cause this vibration. Hope this helps, let me know.
