The 5 speed transmission has a 17mm plug that screws into to the end of the transmission, (it's to the right of the 3 inch round cap with VW on it). You can access it thru the driver side wheel well. Fill until gear oil comes out the hole.

How much and type of gear box oil do I have to use in my mk4 golf, 1.6 litre engine transmission( gearbox)

Mark 4 VW Golf Manual Gearbox
VW has a specific blend of gear oil for that gearbox that you need to buy from VW dealer Parts department. If you cannot get it there, you can use a 75w-90 fully synthetic automotive gear oil .

The capacity is about 2.2 quarts (US) so ensure you buy enough.

If you are changing the gear oil yourself the vehicle must be level. Completely loosen or remove the fill plug first, to ensure you will be able to refill it ,before you remove the drain plug and drain the old oil out of the box. You will need a fluid pump in order to pump the new oil into the box and you keep adding the gear oil until it begins to run out the fill opening. It is full when it stops running out the fill opening so it is important the vehicle is level when you are doing this service.

You will need a good 17 mm Allen key to remove and refit the drain and fill plugs in the gearbox.
The fill plug is on the front left side of the transmission case while the drain plug is on the bottom by the dog bone.

Still waiting an answer to my 2005 XLT ford escape gear challenges

if you are talking about the transmission then the trans needs to be flushed a simple drain and fill is not enough the torque converter holds a lot of fluid and if it is cold where you are maybe frozen.auto trans fluid can mix with antifreeze.

I have a 1998 ford explorer it will start and when you put it in gear and accelerate the gas it barely moves if any at all .can't drive it no were and it smells like oil is in the transmission fluid what...

Look underneath. Is there trans oil leaking? Its red and thin so should be dripping easily.
Is the trans correctly filled? Low oil will prevent it moving. Check trans oil with engine running. Should be near high mark.
Is the smell oil? Or are the brakes jammed on?

Trans stuck in 4th gear shift lever sloppy

bad transmission, I changed one just like it,first thought the clutch had locked up, but changed that and same thing (locked up)and took pan and topshifter out, and the gears actually heat welded themselves together, my guess as to reason would be lack of gear oil. only fix is to replace transmission or rebuild, but with gears in that shape better bet would be to find another, and make sure you change gear oil and fill to proper level

Does a 5 speed manuel transmission use transmisson fluid and where is the dip stick to check the fluid?

Manual transmissions use gear oil, not automatic transmission fluid.
There will be a filler plug on the side of the gearbox. The gear oil should be filled up to the very bottom of the filler plug hole.

Wheres the transmission fluid plug located

I'm assuming this is an automatic transmission for which there will be no drain plug. If you're wishing to drain and refill the trans. you need to remove the trans oil pan and replace the filter and gasket(kit is about $20-30) and then get a funnel and refill through the trans dipstick tube. Start with 2 quarts, run and shift through all the gears and then check your lavel and fill as necesary by half quarts at a time.

Manual Transmission fluid for Ford Escort ZX2

I know this sounds crazy according to Ford:

You can use-
Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX MERCON® Alternative Transaxle Fluid - SAE 75W90 Gear Oil F32Z-19C547-MA API GL-4
You are seeing that right, one instance they call for 75W90 and the other it is ATF. It is ok to run either, 75W90 will give you smoother shifts and less noise.

This transmission is filled through the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) hole.
