Question about 2002 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

2002 Ford Taurus - instrument panel light My instrument panel lights, that eliminate the speedometer tachometer fuel and temp gauges has gone out. The high beam cruise and turn signal lights are all that will light up. About a month ago I found that on startup the dash light was out but 20 minutes later it would come on, when it would it wasn't due to any bump on the road. This happened a few times. When it did the signal lights (arrow heads) would stay lit. NO other lighting problems, stereo cigarette lighter signals breaks and taillights were all ok. About a week ago the instrument panel just never came back on. I replaced the fuse to no avail. Due to the on and off which I have experienced for a month suggests to me a wiring problem (break?? in line). I don't think it is the rheostat that dims the instrument panel lights as it will dim the stereo unit lights. The rheostat will illuminate the passenger compartment I'm hoping there might be a mechanic with good electrical experience that may have some insight into this problem. I hesitate to take the care to a mechanic to find the problem, as I know electrical problems can take many hours to find which will cost me dearly.

When you say the fix is to "replace the cluster" do you mean, replace the circuit board?

If so where is the circuit board located? Is it behind the instrument panel? How do I get to it? I've never pulled a dash apart before. Do I go in from the front or would I have to access it from underneath?

Hi I'm Rick! I'm afraid you have a cluster problem, the cluster houses the gauge package you see in front of you.. all your gauges operate from the printed circuit board to which they are attached and a portion of that board has failed.. The fix is to replace the cluster.

There should be an instrument panel fuse in the fuse box located inside the car. Check the fuse and replace in needed.

Why doesn't my instrument panel work properly. It goes on and off

sounds like you may have a instrument cluster panel problem and will have to go to a shop that can fix it. its possible that there is a contact problem with the cluster to body connection.

Where is cluster for speedometer lights

The "cluster" means all of the things you see under the plastic cover in front of the driver, the 'gauges'. The term is a reference to the 'instrument cluster' including speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, idiot lights, temperature gauge, everything.
Get a second independent opinion since this is very unusual. Most likely you have a blown fuse.

Pontiac sunfire Gauges not working after Battery change

Just pull out the 10amp cluster fuse and put it back in. The cluster will pop right back up. My 2004 does it every time the battery goes dead.

Gauges don't work, Fuse panel is a pain to get at

I have a '97 Chevy 1500 with an automatic trans. This morning i started it up and the speedometer and tachometer needles sit at zero. Also the gear selector fails to light up. Upon accelerating from a stop, it starts in third gear. I can manually downshift to second but not to first. It will not upshift automatically. Only manually. Also, it will not shift into overdrive when up to speed. The check gauges light comes on but only intermittently.
Additionally, the service engine light came on however I suspect that this is a separate problem as the 262 engine does not run well on this horrible new 10% ethanol fuel and it makes it throw an O2 sensor code. Does anybody have a clue here? I changed the 10amp fuse for the gauges but it hasn't fixed the issue. I didn't think it would resolve it because the rest of the instrument panel works (oil pressure, temp, voltage, fuel). Please, any advice.
