Question about 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

My 2003 PT cruiser's engine light came on, then the car started running extremely rough. It became so bad, I had to pull over. Sitting idle, it seems to idle a little rough, but when I gas it gas, it would rev up the die down, then rev up and die down - sorta pulsating. I just checked the code for my 2003 PT cruiser by using the run-off-run-off-run method and it came back with a code p 0340. The code chart indicates a misfire in cylinder 4. Does that mean I need to change the spark pulgs? What's the fix?

Find your air mass flow sensor in the stiff collar of the air ducting immediately after the air filter. Have the engine running and disconnect the plug to the MAF. If this makes the car run evenly again you need to replace the broken MAF. The misfire on plug 4 I think is a downstream event of the MAF not sending the right info to the ECU and consequently not providing the right fuel / air mix to the engine

    just re-read my so called 'solution' and completely over-looked the crank sensor code. You need to remove the air box to give yourself some elbow room. The crank sensor is on the right hand end of the engine as you look at it under the hood and consists of a black plastic oval shaped plate about 50mm in length with an electric connection to it. It is held in by one 10mm bolt. Withdraw it. A new sensor will cost about $40. Lube the 'O' ring with a touch of oil before slipping it in. Reconnect the electrical wiring. I stick to my earlier diagnosis that the misfire on 4 is a downstream event so do not worry about it. The code should clear immediately and the engine light within 15 minutes of driving around

Rough idle


Sounds like a automatic choke sticking....Take the air duct loose from carb..While accelerating engine spray bottle throttle spray in.....as the car tries to die...stop spraying...Repeat 3 or 4 times.....It will clean your injectors. Runs alot better...Remember....bottle throttle spray...not carborator spray

2005 pt cruiser rough idle when ac on


The ac compressor pulls a good number of horses from a 4 cyl engine.
Any minor performance problem is amplified when the ac is running.
You probably have a weak spark plug or wire, or an issue with an injector.
Is the check engine light coming on when it is rough ?

I CHANGED THE TIMING BELT AND SPARK PLUGS AND WHEN I DRIVE THE PT CRUISER ON THE FREEWAY IT DRIVES GOOD BUT WHEN I COME TO A STOP THE PT CRUISER RUNS BAD


Does the vehicle turn off, run rough, or hesitate?

It sounds as though you have a faulty Idle Air Control Valve".

i hav a 2003 pt cruiser 2.2 crd touring it wont go over 3000 revs engine light cums on. error code p0243 i hav replaced wastegate solenoids cleaned egr valve cud it be the mass air flow sensor that has a problem thanx

2003 Monte Carlo SS Hesitates and Dies after running for awhile


The ck engine light should not be ignored, what sensor was shown to be bad ? Have it scanned again and replace the sensor that is bad if it still runs rough you might want to consider a tune up. Plugs, wires, fuel and air filter's and clean the throttle body with some gumout. It could also be the IAC motor Idle Air Control. Good Luck

Pt cruiser rough idling


Replace your Fuel Filter and see if it does not Help. Even a Partially Clogged Fuel Filter will cause this Problem.

RPMs bounce around whenever in idle


The throttle position sensor could cause this problem.They are usually easy to replace.
