Question about 1996 Volvo 960

I'm currently interested in a 1996 volvo 960; without having much volvo knowledge, what do you suggest I investigate and or what type of repairs are common after 140000 miles on the car

These cars feature great engines, so-so interior bits (peeling door panels), crappy electronics (poor solder joints in components) and problematic climate control.

I would get a 940 or 940 turbo over a 960 and I own two 960's currently. (as well as a 940T). The 940's have much simpler engine systems and are very robust. The engine is a non-interference design so a broken timing belt doesn't ruin the engine. Parts on the 940 are about half of what the 960 is....I could go on.

The engine is glued together(5 pieces)so it is not possible to repair/rebore without volvo expertise.otherwise the car is bomb proof.the only other problems are the normal bushes and shockers, and there are lots of bushes.....expect about 20mpg as an average

Does the current owner of the vehicle have well kept service records? If he does, ask him if the timing belt was changed on this car. And ask him to show you the service records. The timing belt should have already been replaced, but if not, you will need to replace it immediately. Along with water pump, seals, and balance shaft belt. If the vehicle has an interference motor, and the timing belt breaks going down the road, it has the potential to ruin the motor. The timing belt on a Volvo is not for the beginner, and most shops will not even touch it. Tech will need special tools to lock down the cams, or risk even bigger issues. Also, do a visual inspection, paying close attention to the undercarriage, looking for oil leaks. Volvo's are great cars, but the routine maintenance can be costly.

"The timing belt on a Volvo is not for the beginner, and most shops will not even touch it." Really?

960's don't have a balance shaft. How did you get to be a moderator when you obviously are not familiar with these cars?

My 960 1996 volvo not seclecting into drive

Hello
Since repair in any automatic transmission is way beyond the skills of any home do it yourself mechanic I suggest you find a local transmission repair shop and have them look at this problem and rive the car, they will do this for free in most cases in the hope of getting the job of repairing the problem. If you do need a transmission replaced go for a factory re-manufactured unit from the dealer or from a parts store like NAPA or Carquest, they have all the latest parts and upgrades and are far better quality than the ones you get at discount auto parts stores like O'Riley or Autozone for example. Yes they cost more but you get what you pay for. Get more than one estimate for the price to install the transmission if you get it from an outside source. Hope this helps.

Radio will not power on

I had an identical problem, but i fixed it with a dew fuses, it turns out that these volvos have 3 different fuses for the radio, there are two inside the car in the panel, and the third is under the hood just behind the battery. See if any of those fuses are bad, if all the fuses are good, check the connections behind the radio, i had to pry the connections to make them fit better on the back; if none of this works, then its most likely a bad radio or faulty wiring...

1996 Vilvo 960

you have to get under the car on the drivers side. There is a dipstick, but it's very short and if you do manage to reach it from the top your gonna burn yourself.

Of course have the engine warm and on a level surface when you check it.

It will be a yellow dipstick on the drivers side.
