Question about 1996 BMW 318

No fuel to the spark plugs after a motor swap

Swapped out the motor in my 1996 BMW 318i with a 1997 318ti engine. after connecting everything I have spark, I have fuel to the fuel rail, but not building any fuel pressure enough to activate the injectors. The new motor does not have a fuel pressure regulator, would this cause it to not build any pressure at all? If not, why do I not have any fuel pressure?

    Fuel pressure regulator is probably mounted elsewhere on the 97, I will have to figure something out with that, but no existance of a fuel pressure regulator would make it run bad, but it would not make it not run at all.

    Crimped the return line and still no pressure. I bench tested the fuel pump and it did run. I checked the pressure inline right after the pump and while craning I only have about 5 pounds of pressure. I did a test and got my air compressor out and injected the fuel line with air while cranking the motor and the car fired! this proves that the problem is lack of fuel pressure but still dont know why.

    Checked the fuel pump, I have 45 pounds of pressure at the fuel rail so the fuel pump is working now. I have spark, I have 45 pounds at the rail, but it wont fire.

    checked some things tonight, as of now I still have fuel pressure, I used a noid light and checked for pulses in the injectors and the wiring for the injectors is perfect. so we have fuel to the fuel rail, we have electicity going to the injectors, but no firing. I checked spark by putting the plug in the wire and holding it to a ground and I do have spark, seems a little weak to me but there is spark. The 2 things that make a engine run (fuel and spark) we have, but yet no run. Im lost.

Must have a fuel pressure reg to hold line pressure in the fuel line could the 97 vehicle have a fuel pressure reg in the tank as part of the fuel pump assembly

    incorrect if it doesnt hold line pressure it will not push past the pintal of the injector crimp the return line and see what happens

    dont dicount a faulty fuel pump its possible just coincedent ay

    did you need to swap the ECU over as well the injector earth through the unit maybe you may be out a wire or term. check all your earths again to be sure im still trying mate AUST.

Make sure the ECM (computer),it's compatible between the motors also automatic ecm and smanual are not compatible, try starting fluid to see if you got spark at the coils.,

code po306 refers to cylinder 6 misfire detected===causes ---engine mechanical fault--wiring--ignition/ fuel system--injector--ECT/MAF sensor--ECM

the pressure is good so rule out mechanical fault
injectors being cleaned and tested so rule out injectors
fuel pressure not tested to see if it is average or minimum
check MAF sensor for correct voltage and/ or resistance
IF the misfire moved when the plug and wires were swapped then check the wires and connections . If not then check distributor cap for crack or dirty in side the cap allowing shorting of the HT spark

Swapped engine fro 97 aspire manual trans into 97 aspire w auto trans now engine wont start,fuel fine no spark to plugs. all wires are connected engine ran great in the manual car


If yu still have the other engine try switching the distributers.. could be a IGN Module which lives in side the distributer.. Or take the module out and go to Oreillys auto parts and have them test the module.. Since it sounds like you did the swap yourself.. Go back over everything on top of the engine and make sure all connections are plugged in corectly. The computer provides power to the module.. check to see if it is getting power. look at the wiring diagram and find out what pin on the computer is suppling this single.. and test it.

I have a 98 318i it just cranks but does not start. Spark is ok, injectors fine & compression is ok as well, as the computer box. fuel pump ok but still no engine running


You have not mentioned any scanning of the engine control computer for fault codes??????? You do that 1st before anything else, step numeral uno!

1986 Ford F150 6cyl, carb., spark good, fuel in throttle, dry spark plugs,...what is problem? Just swapped motors, but same everything except 85 motor.


Because there is no fuel to the plugs I would pull the 02 senor out of the tailpipe and see if the catalytic converter or muffler is plugged. If they are they put back pressure on the engine and not allow the fuel to be drawn into the cylinder and fire.

Is this a 4.9L engine? An inline 6? My database doesn't show a 4.9L in that model year. It does show that engine in 95.
Did you visually check for spark at number 4 cylinder?
For 95-- 4.9L--fuel pressure--50--60 psi. Use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, see if fuel pressure will hold for a bit with everything off.
Fuel--spark--compression. Some ford makes and models, ford can disable the fuel injector, if misfire is detected. I only mention this because, swapping injectors may not be conclusive? You can check for fuel injector pulse, anyway.
How long since over-all tune-up? You did get a new fuel filter, if inline filter, correct?

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank.Your vehicle is fuel injected and does not have a carburetor unless someone swapped motors and made it carbureted.Hope this helps.Good luck.

a bad camshaft position sensor or a vacuum leak. Most likely sensor. Is your check engine light on? you can test sensors with an ohmmeter to determine if a sensor is good or not. It wouldn't be bad to check and make sure your coil packs aren't bad by checking each plug for spark. You can lay one plug and wire at a time one engine so end probe of plug is fairly next to metal. Have someone crank while you watch for spark.

Hi i have a Bmw 318i 1998 model and this morning the car just doesn't want to start, there seems to be no power on the spark plugs can any one help please


Clean and verify the TDC cam sensor, left front side of the motor, it's a black wire and connector held down by a wire clasp.
