Number 1 is at the 5 o'clock position. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The distributor turns clockwise.

SOURCE: Need to know the plug wiring distributo to plugs

1-3-4-2. bring your number 1 cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. pull the plug and rotate the engine with your finger over the plug hole. on the harmonic balancer( crankshaft pulley) you will feel pressure in the plug hole on one of the two revolutions of the crank. the one that feels like its blowing out on your finger is top dead center compression stroke. line up the mark on your crank to top dead center. wherever your rotor button under the dist cap is pointing is where your # 1 plug wire should go. follow the firing order from there. clockwise i think. 1 3 4 2

Not sure how to replce spark plug wires from the distributor need help please send info

change one spark wire at a time on the distributor.buy new set of spark plugs wires remove them from box.match old wires with new wires to use the correct length to each cylinder.now if you need to change distributor cap.mark location distributor cap.number tag plug wires on the distributor cap so you can remove plug wires on distributor cap so you can replace cap and rotor and put wires back on the distributor cap in correct place.remember change one plug wire at a time so you wont get confuse.

I changed the plug wires and now I have arcing from one of the plug wires at the distributor and the car is running rough

if it's leakiong at the distributor, there may be a crack in the distributor. Try pushing the wire in deeper. If this doesn't work, get a new cap.
If it's leaking from the wire, the wire probably is bad or not connected right at the spark plug.
If you have more questions, please let me know.

Dual distributor spark plug wiring diagram for model building.

You are correct in your idea about how the plug wires are attached. If you want to duplicate control wiring you would need to obtain the wiring diagram of the brand of ignition system you want to duplicate. (MSD etc. These systems also require a small battery in order for them to operate. Wiring to distributor was far less complex when vertex type magneto distributors sere used as all that was required was a ground wire to shut them down (exactly like your lawnmower works), As far as plumbing, all systems need to meet safety standards set forth by the NHRA but aside from meeting those standards, each engine builder decides where to locate such items as primary and secondary fuel injectors etc. If you go to the NHRA website, you may be able to find a decent photo of someones engine...that may be helpful. Also check the rule book for such items as kill switch location, brake, chute release etc.

1987 GMC Jimmy Distributor cap and Rotor replacement

A diagram may not be needed as its a reasonably easy fix to do on your own.the distributor ca p will only fit on properly one way because at the base of the cap locaters can only fit the distributor if they line up.When doing the spark plug leads do them one at a time and if nessecary write or mark leads as 1,2 etc .The rotor can only fit on one way but put a mark on the distributor to show where the rotor was pointing when you took it off and if it still points there when the new one is fitted. When changing distributor cap and leads they have to go to the correct place.Pays to mark the outside of distributor cap where the locating bits are On the new and old one.Fit the new cap and rotor then take a spark plug lead and fit to new cap 1 at a time. You can tell by lining up the marks on the outside of the distributor cap when you hold them one on top of the other.Good luck
