You have to replace the ecm or wire in an old style chrysler voltage regulator. I can tell you how if you need me to.

There is an idle speed control motor on the side of the car's throttle body that is supposed to keep the idle stable even when additional loads like the AC are on. It's possible the motor may be damaged due to a voltage spike when you had it jumped. It's also possible the AC system may be pulling the engine speed down due to an internal problem with a faulty AC compressor.
Did the shop that checked the charging system check to make sure alternator was charging properly with the additional loads of the AC, headlights and blower motor on? It's very possible the system is overloading a weak alternator.

Your alternator is not putting out a regulated output, this is most likely due to a faulty diode pack, your cheapest option would be to locate a second hand alternator or maybe price a new one? the part can be replaced but can be a pain to remove and can require some specialist tools.

It sounds like what you fried is the diodes on the alternator. You are probably due for a new alternator. On the bright side, it's much cheaper than the computer.

Car wont start, battery dead, new battery and new alternator when we unhook the positve cable the car dies instancly. where should we check next?


start the engine and connect a tester to measure voltage between the terminals of the battery you should read more than 13.5 volts. If it's under that (ex. 12v) then the alternator doesn't work no matter if it's new if it's under 13.5 volts it's ruined. Assuming that the alternator regulator it's incorporated in the alternator cause if it has an external regulator, that's where the problem is.

1994 gmc sonoma with alternator putting out 11.7 volts no matter what you have on. New battery and rebuilt alternator. What else could cause this low voltage situation. The battery and abs lights are on.


Try checking the gauge inside the truck
If it reads wrong - not to worry - just carry on as it is.

Try turning everything on - then CAREFULLY remove the NEGATIVE battery cable - if the truck continues to run WELL - the problem is most likely the gauge.

Check it the local battery store - free.

You mean the alternator pulley won't rotate?

If so, the battery is dying because there's no alternator to keep it charged up, so there's no electricity to keep the computer and spark plugs working, and the engine then dies.

An alternator pulley that won't rotate means the bearings inside the alternator have frozen up solid.

The only fix is a new alternator, and probably a new belt. You might need a new battery too, if the battery has been discharged too much and damaged.

Make sure your alternator isnt faulty first if you haven't already. A faulty alternator can intermittently produce sufficient voltage, but cause the symptoms you describe. A new battery seems to 'fix' it but when the battery is drained(because the faulty alternator is unable to keep it charged) ...the symptoms return. Good Luck

If the belt is 3 yrs old or older, change it. If it has oil or anti-freeze or grease on it, change it. If new, add more tension to the belt.
