VSS. Vehicle speed sensor. Although Im sure its already been done but check the transmission fluid. Change it out with new fluid and a filter if you want to and when you do, look at the old fluid and see if its blackish or not pink/red. Look for metal shavings in the fluids catch pan and in the transmissions pan and in/around the filter. The small stuff 1st. Then you can rule out that and move to the bigger stuff.
check transmission fluid and notice color if dark red or maroon a trans mission fluid and filter change is in order/everybody changes the oil/filter but not transmission fluid and filter this is working 10 more and hard than the engine!/sorry when off ! sound like no overdrive concern could be stuck valve onside trans (please note when pan is dropped a little metal is normal chucks is not)good luck!
most likely the TR sensor that tells the TCM when to change ratios
it also could be a problem VSS that also tells the TCM when it is right to change ratios
run the fault codes
Assuming there is no shift solenoid problems,(1-2 solenoid OFF in 3rd gear and ON in 4th gear!) Then I would say that your transmission is broken but more often than not, is repairable. First order of business would be to remove the transmission drain pan from the bottom of the unit. Loosen the attaching bolts slowly and in a circular manner, allowing the trans fluid to drain into an appropriate size pan. Remove the last of the pan bolts, and without spilling the last of the fluid, remove the pan from the trans. Carefully inspect the fluid for the presence metal either as chunks or suspended in the fluid. Also, smell the fluid for any "burnt" oder. The more metal you find, the more money to repair the unit. After component repair, be sure all trouble codes are cleared.
First thing you will need to do is change the transmission fluid and filter. You may have metal shavings inside your transmission pan blocking the filter kit and this would cause your vehicle to skip gears. Try installing the new fluid and filter kit first. Since you will have the pan off, replace the A and B shift solenoid if the new filter kit and fluid don't stop your transmission from skipping gears
No drain plug, the filter is inside trans.
Remove trans oil pan (it will be full of tran fluid so loosen bolts on one end and work your way to other end)
May have to take bolts out of a cross member and slid it back to get to all the pan bolts.
The filter is flat and you'll see it once the pan is dropped. Pull straight down to remove.
Clean out sludge and old fluid from pan and scrape old gasket off.
Push new filter into place. Its a good idea to use gasket sealer to help keep it from leaking and to help hold gasket in place so bolt holes stay lined up while bolting up pan.
Tighten all bolts evenly. Then refill tran with the fluid your service manual list. Operate your truck in all gears (shifting back and forth) and recheck trans fluid level.
Its not a hard job to change filter and fluid. If you can change your own motor oil and have a rachet and sockets then you couldnt have any problems. Just get your filter and trans fluid from your local auto parts store like Autozone or Advance Auto Parts.
Change fluid and trans filter check magnet in trans pan for metal clean pan with a rag refill with senthic fluid leave a court low let it idle till hot then add a bottle of trans x or lucas leave idlen work the trans from 1st to park letting the trans take gear an let it stay in gear for a little bit then back to park that help move the fluid threw the trans drive easy for a week ir you Lucas pore half qurt of trans fluid in use the rest of fluid to thin down Lucas its really thick repeat till the bottle of lacus is in I hope this helps
Ok the 1st thing to do is change the fluid and filter, while the pan is off look for excess debris from the clutch packs, there will be some stuff in the pan, but if there is allot then the clutches are starting to fail and you will need an overhaul, how many miles on truck, 60,000 is recommended change for trans fluid, also use the latest GM approved Dextron 5 fluid, it is the best around and makes old transmissions shift much better, I used it in my 96 Corvette and what a difference!
