There are a few parts on the car that activate in Forward gear. Some of those parts are Luxury extras like Automatic Parking brake release. This brake release is Vacuum operated and when the Selector is shifted to a Forward position a Vacuum valve under the dash kicks out the Parking brake whether it is set or not.

The second part that works only in a Forward gear is an engine management system. I remember reading that to test the components on the car; the car had to be in Drive or a Forward gear. The article said I would not be able to test some solenoids without shifting to a Forward gear.

This would mean your car is not switching those components on. I believe if you can look at a wiring diagram you could test the Solenoids and verify them as off or on. Then you would know the part responsible for switching them is bad. Just trace the wiring back to the source for several Solenoids.

I wish I could name the part, but so many cars, so little time, I just remember the part is there.

Citroen jumper gear change

Your description makes me remember an old Austin Metropolitan I had once. The gear linkage was crude and it was possible sometimes to engage two gears at once resulting in a lock-up and a stalled engine. It never happened while driving at speed.

When repairing a gearbox, once the selector linkage has been removed it is usual to select two gears in order to lock the shafts for the tightening or loosening of a retaining nut. There is built into the internal selector linkage an interlock to prevent two gears being selected.

I imagine that interlock in your gearbox is worn or broken...

Galant vrg-gdi-when i engage reverse the car stalls--but once you start moving --ok

You vehicle uses a Idle air control motor,(IAC) when you put a load on the vehicle (Drive or reverse) the ECM detects the load and idles up the IAC, even for the A/C (air conditioner) You can try a throttle body cleaning. or a new IAC

I have a F250 lariat with a 460 - truck stalls when I put it in gear - even after it runs for 20 min. Sometimes it will stall while I'm driving. I had carborator replaced last year. Hope you can help.

Some possible causes could be:

Vacuum leaks cause an engine to run lean witch can cause the vehicle to stall when put into gear.

Improper base idle adjustment can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse

A malfunctioning or damaged carburetor can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse

Improper ignition timing can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse.

A malfunctioning or damaged transmission or torque converter can cause the vehicle to stall when shifted into drive or reverse

Car turns off when put in reverse or drive in the mornings, its an automatic,a golf III Volkswagen

This is a common problem with alot of other makes of cars, it has to do with the air fuel mixture when the car is cold these settings are changed under normal operating temperature by the ECM to make the engine run normally when it is not at optimal running temp. The cause of the engine to stall when in put into reverse is the reverse gear in any car is geared higher then forward first gear so the engine has to work harder to move the vehicle and with a cold engine if the engine is not 100% tuned (proper maintenance and tune up) it will stall when cold and specially when put into reverse. This is a very difficult problem to diagnose and only a highly skilled vdub mechanic working on your car can fix this. I could tell you 8 different things you could try but they may not work, its kinda trail and error. Hope this helps

2005 g6 stalling

I would suggest checking your wiring (core wire on the distributor, plug wires and the negative battery ground) I would imagine that the forward motion of the vehicle is possibly making your wires lose connectivity and making the car stall. Just a thought though.
