Question about 1996 Ford Taurus

I have a 96 Ford Taurus station wagon and the drivers window all of the sudden won't roll up. It's stuck all the way down. When you press up on the switch...nothing when you press down on the switch the relay clicks in the fuse box. I don't know if it's the relay or the switch im terrible at car problems. Im praying it's not the motor we don't have the money for all that. It's about to rain too so it's really going to get nasty lol Help !!! Thanks

    Jonesspamai you are what this site is all about. People helping people. Im thinking it is the switch because when I hit the door where the switch is it goes up and down just fine. The motor has never made a sound the car only has 45k original miles on it this is the first problem ive ever had with it.

From the sound of it, it's most likely the switch. Most competent mechanics should be able to fix this fairly easily. If you decide you want to fix this yourself you can contact me by responding to this message and I'll try to tell you how.

    First you're going to need a few tools.

    Screw drivers flat and philips

    Ohm meter or continuity tester

    Panel removal tool



    You may also need

    Neddle nose pliers

    Utility knife

    Socket set

    Allen and Torx drivers

    Note pad to take notes as to where everything goes.



    Once you have your tools you need to remove the door panel. Open the door and look for any screws that are attaching the arm rest, door panel and any other attachments on the door. Some may be under plastic covers. Once all the screws are removed, start at the bottom back corner of the door and using your panel removal tool start pulling the door panel off. There are plastic plug in fastener that hold the panel on, you'll need to slide your panel removal tool around these fastener and pry them away from the door. As your taking the door off you'll need to keep an eye out for areas that are not coming loose and determine if there is a fastener holding the panel there. Once you have the panel loose there should be wires and maybe cables (remote mirrors) still attached to the panel and the panel should be hanging from where it clips over the door along the window bottom. Carefully lift the panel to release it from this clip, now carefully turn the panel around or over depending on how the wires or cables allow. At this point you should be able to unplug the window switch and test it. There should be three contacts on the switch one is common (most likely in the middle) the other two are the switched contacts. Hook up your tester and push the switch both ways you should get a reading near zero one way or the other, change your test lead to the other end and repeat. Hopefully we find a bad switch because the other option is most likely the motor ($$), this will be indicated by no response from the tester when you work the switch one of the directions. Assuming we have a bad switch you can maybe get one from the auto parts store but you may have to go to the dealer or an auto salvage to find your switch.

    If it's not the switch changing the motor is a very complicated job and I don't know if I can direct you as to how test it and or change it. At that point if you still want to try, it would be best to buy a manual from the auto part store for your vehicle but be sure it covers changing the window motor, not all of them do.

I own a 99 Ford Taurus wagon. I can roll the rear window up & down but it won't go all the way up!! What causes this & can I fix it??


The window may be binding in the track and the motor is too weak to close it completely. Try cleaning the track. If that doesn't help the motor may need replacement

I have a 1994 ford taurus station wagon, the battery won't stay charged, the confusing thing is that the inside panel and door light works


you have a faulty alternator by the sounds of it, try this simple test, : test the voltage of the battery with the vehicle off with a simple multimeter, it should read just over 12v then test it with the car running, it should read around 14-14.5 volts if it still only reads 12v then your alternator needs replacing.

My '02 Ford Taurus SES windows won't roll down


Power windows are wired through their own relay which is usually located in the fuse box. If you don't have faulty switches in your window system I would have the relay checked out.

If you cannot operate any of the power windows and you lost power on all at the one time it is most unlikely that the motors are faulty.

96 taurus wagon goes to neutral when vehicle comes to full stop.


That would be your neutral park switch is bad or broken. If the shifter linkage is not aligned with the neutral park switch it will not work properly. Located on drivers side on top of Trans.

just a guess but Id look for a bad chasis ground. I say this cuz the interior light switch for the door is a normally- open - grounding. The test for this theory would be to run a jumper wire from the neg batt terminal to the body, or from the eng to the body/chasis.
