Question about Ford Ranger

1 Answer

Hi, i have a 1999 ranger xlt 3.0 engine. it is running rough and poor mpg. the check engine light is on, and i had it checked, it said the EGR valve and the egr contoler. so i replaced both and the check engine light came back on after 60 miles. still runs rough. could it be pluged fuel injectors? also i need to go get an emission test, should i do that first, before any more repairs ? miles on ranger is 67k thank you doug

Hi before you have the emmisions test done what you should do is go out and buy a decent fuel line cleaner, make sure you buy correct type ie petrol or diesel, also dont buy a cheap make as they dont work.

A good brand to buy would be Red X then follow instructions on back of bottle, how ever it will say pour the bottle into a full tank of fuel dont do this pour it into half a tank of fuel as this will work a lot quicker and clean a lot easier.

once you have poured it into the tankk you need to drive normal for at least 20 min then drive hard for 20 min such as pull away faster then drive normal for the last 20min, doing this will ensure the injectors and fuel lines are clean properly.

Doing this should improve the rough running and it will also improve mpg, also doing this before having the test done will improve the test results.

the chances are your problem is going to be dirty fuel that you have put in your car at some point so a good cleaning will usually solve the problem.

if the cleaner makes your car run better then it would be a good idea to change the fuel and air filters before you go for the test as this will make a huge difference.

let me know if you still have any problems after using the fuel line cleaner ok

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Hi, thank you. I have done everything you said to do . I have faithfully changed my fuel filter 12-15k miles and i use chevron gas , and the chevron fuel cleaner. replaced the plugs ,pvc ,wires. this just started this problem around 65k miles. what else can be done?

hi, if you have done the following then it sounds like you have looked after you r vehicle the best you can, so on hearing that it sounds to me like it is going to be a part failing and not just a case of a good service or tune up, without any test being done it would be difficult to say for sure what the problem is.

the next thing i would suggest would be a faulty or blocked injector these can be tested but would be taken out to be tested, if the engine revs up all the way then this would suggest your fuel pump is fine so injectors would be next thing to try.

other than mechanical it could be electrical but without testing the car for error codes you would only be guessing i mean it could be ecu problem.

if you have the em test done then this might give you some idea of the problem depending on the results, to be sure you would need to get a diagnostic check done and possibly get the injectors tested.

Code P0405

CEL on, P0405
that dont effect engine running, nor can many more DTC>
DTC = errors.
405 is EGR.
if the egr is stuck open the engine stall.s
if it is not working dead, only the TEST FAILS.
true back to 1987 cars. (about)
its federal mandated test in the USA from then.

EGR is kinda simple on newer cars.
its a valve. and some have read back. telling the brain
hey, i didnt move.
id clean it first.
- EGR volume control solenoid valve
- EGR volume control solenoid valve harness is open or shorted
- EGR volume control solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection

Where is the egr valve on a 99 Ford expedition

The EGR valve is in a very difficult spot to work on. If the EGR is bad it will set off the check engine light and make the vehicle run rough or stall at idle. It really doesn't make it run rough while driving or accelerating. What are the conditions when the car runs rough?

1992 3.0 V6 with a check engine light which code reads EGR and I'm getting 10-11 mpg! Before replacing the Egr is there anything I can do to maybe clean it, check it w/ some instrument, etc.?

You can check the egr with a vacuum pump to see if egr is operating or apply vacuum to it with a hose by sucking on the hose once you attach it to the valve. . If the car runs rough while you apply vacumm then chances are the egr is working and you have another problem. The intake could be clogged up from carbon and needs to be cleaned out.

Engine runs rough at certain speeds 3.0 v6 flex-fuel 1999 ranger

Check and see if the EGR valve is leaking, to check this spray water on it at idle, if the water steams off the valve is leaking and is the source of your problem, also are you sure you hooked the new DPFE sensor up right? re-check it..
