Will a 2010 subaru forester engine work/fit in a 2002 model?

The engine mounts, exhaust manifold, and wiring harnesses are different. But, if you use just the block, and maybe switch some sensors out with you old ones, it might be possible. Subaru has gone through quite a few changes with in the last couple of years, so, it would not surprise me if it did not work. I hope this info gives you some ideas to go off of!

Try another scanner before you get too involved. I have seen scanners go bad when it was not the connection. Good luck and have a great day.

Transfer case is popping/jerking in low speed turns

Center differential is broken, you can test it by doing tight circles in a car park 3 or 4 to the left and repeat to the right,if it doesn't un block and it still feels like you're driving over marbles (big ones) when you turn you're sure it's the c.diff.
Check tyres are all in spec.identical and same usage, right pressure.

Would need to know more. Did the 'check engine' light come on about the time you first noticed this happening? If so, have the code checked for diagnosis. I would suspect FUEL TRIM error (or similar) in the computer compensating the fuel injection when the car is put in gear versus in Park or Neutral when cold.
