Question about Ford Focus

1 Answer

Hi , I have a 2001 ford focus 2.0 dohc zetec engine. I just replaced the timming belt, and now is runing rough, low rpm and wants to stall. when i did this i could not find any timming marks, on cam or crank pulleys. so i scriped my own on the cam pulleys. i think i am one gear off on the timming.after adjusting the tensoner . please advise what i need to do next . also its sucking up the gas after the new belt change. also what mpg should this car be getting? i'm only getting 15mpg i have new plugs ,wires ,pvc. thank you, doug.

Until the cam timing is properly set (which from your description it is not) up gaging mpg is impossiable.

There are marks you just didn't see them or know where to look., here is the procedure to change the belt.

Changing the Belt

  • Step 1 Rotate the engine with a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft damper bolt; rotate it clockwise until you align the camshaft pulley's timing mark with the cylinder head's mark and the crankshaft pulley's mark with the oil pump housing's TDC mark.
  • Step 2 Remove the spark plugs from the engine by removing each spark plug wire (grab the wire by the boot) and unscrewing each plug with a torque wrench and a spark plug socket--turn the wrench counterclockwise.
  • Step 3 Hold the crankshaft with a strap wrench or chain wrench to keep it from turning and remove the crankshaft damper by removing its bolt. Remove the timing belt from the pulleys.
  • Step 4 Install the new belt in a clockwise direction over the pulleys, making sure the camshaft and crankshaft's timing sprockets are still properly aligned. Keep the belt tight between the camshaft and crankshaft as you install it and loosen the belt tensioner's bolt so it snaps into place.
  • Step 5 Reinstall the crankshaft's damper and tighten the bolt to 88 foot-pounds.
  • Step 6 Rotate the crankshaft by two full turns and stop when the crankshaft sprocket is at the TDC position. Tighten the tensioner's attaching bolt to 18 foot-pounds.
  • Step 7 Reinstall all other parts in the reverse order of installation.

I wanted to add that getting the belt on wrong will not damage the engine, just makes the engine run like do do, as u have found out, when u do a job like this U should have a factory manual in hand ALWAYS, that way u don't end up doing it twice, here is a link to a used service and repair manual for this car on ebay, CHEAP! Even with 35 years as a factory trained tech i still get the manual out to do timing belts.

Does this car have an interference motor?

ford escort/ focus engine 2.0 l spi sohc 1997-2004 has been identified as an intereference engine and that means very likely valve to piston damage
( auto data timing belt information )
note-- up to 2002 year Ford has not recommended a timing belt interval for changing
Ford has however recommended a replacement every 120.000 miles using the service history as a guide
however good professional trade practice recommends every 60.000 miles ( 100.00klms) and the replacement work should include replacement of the crank and cam shaft seals and idler pulleys involved ( the biggest destroyer of belts is oil)
recommended labor time is 2 hours
if the belt has broken then head removal and valve work will add up to 5 hours to that time

If you Blew off the timing belt then need Head work also since it is an interference Motor
meaning that the Valve train and Pistons Have no Clearance so U are going to need a lot more work than just a timing belt to run

I have a 2000 ford focus 2.0 zetec dual overhead cam with a broken timing belt at low speed. Is this engine a non interference engine?

all Zetec engines (2.0 DOHC) are NOT interference engines. There are deep reliefs cut into the top of the piston to clear the valves when they are fully extended. There will be no valve damage if the timing belt breaks on a Zetec engine.
