Question about 1998 Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

Evap emmision system

My check engine light keeps going off so i took it down to autozone and had the code read. It keeps coming up with a code for a leak in the system. I have changed both of the solenoid valves and the gas cap and i am still having the same problems. My problems are the fact that the car starts hard, and when the car is warmed up if i drive through a parking lot, or somewhere where it basically idles, the car's RPMs will jump up and down and then die.

Would any of that cause the car to die when going up a hill??

  • b_jongbloedt Jun 07, 2010

There are no other codes that are coming up other than the evap leak. The pcv valve was changed 3 months ago. The wires were changed somewhere around 5 years ago, but I don't know about the plugs or the fuel filter.

Thank you for your help, but I have another question.
I was searching around the internet and found that bonnevilles have problems with their fuel pressure regulators. It is really just a shot in the dark on my part, but would this be a possibility?

  • b_jongbloedt Jun 10, 2010

So I ended up breaking down and bringing the bonne to a dealership. It turns out that my problem was a bad fuel pressure regulator. I really hope it is the only problem that the car was having. Thank you for your help.

The fuel tank pressure switch can be causing this as well as rust or corrosion build up on the gas filler neck not allowing a good seal. Your vehicle may need to be connected to a smoke machine to check for vacuum leaks in the emissions system.

Typically the emissons system won't cause that kind of an issue. I believe we are dealing with multiple issues here. When was the last time plugs, wires, pcv valve, and fuel filter were changed? Are there any other codes present besides emission codes?

Since no other codes are present would start with mechanical issues of changing plugs, fuel filter and possibly wires.

It is possible you can check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure guage, If you disconnect the vacuum line going to the regulator pressure should jump up about 10psi if pressure does not change you can suspect a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

How do i get check engine light out for emmision test

You cannot make the check engine light go off by replacing or removing a fuse. You need to fix the problem that is causing the light to come on. It might be as simple as replacing the gas cap. I would take the car to AutoZone or another auto parts store and have the trouble codes read. The store will usually give you a printout of possible problems associated with the code(s). If you want to spend the money you could buy a code reader and read the codes and then clear the codes which will cause the check engine light to go off for a short time (maybe long enough to get theemission test done if you're lucky!).

Frist thing you will need the exact code to pin piont a location and in the rear is the EVAP system and it could be a number of things get the code from Autozone or some place and get back to me.

My check engine light on my 2006 Chevy Equinox keeps coming on. I have replaced the gas cap because the original one wouldn't screw on tight. I also took it to a repair shop and they replaced the evap vent...

I would bring it back to the shop that did the work. If the code is coming out as a problem with the evap system it is not abnormal for the system to take 2 or 3 days for it to read again.

You have an intermitten problem, and 10 to one it's in the evap emissions system. With the light coming on and off the computor doesn't have time to store a code. When the light comes on and stays on, then go back to autozone and get the code.

Sounds like the dealer has more work to do on the EVAP System. Smoke test the system and check Tech Service Bulletins. You could go to a local garage,it would be cheaper.

My check engine light is on, I unhooked the battery and it didn't go out, neither did my radio blank out it's settings. I unhooked the positive and negative, and the light didn't reset nor did the battery...

the codes p0441,445,446 all refer to the EVAP system
problems include incorrect flow detected, purge valve short circuited, vent control -circuit malfunction ===== the causes have a range from hose connections --intake leak--EVAP canister purge valve --wiring short circuit ------wiring--EVAP purge valve ---ECM
a loose fuel cap will upset the system but basically all of the faults point to a purge valve and wiring problem

Evaporation Emissions

On most newer car the reason the evap system light come on is because the gas cap was not closed tightly. Also do not top off when fueling because this will ruin the evap system. What the eveporative sytem does is to make sure gasoline fumes don't go into the atmosphere. It basically sucks the fume from the gastank into the engine along with the regular combustion. First make sure the gas cap is good. If it is old replace it with a new one. Close it tightly. You may have to disconnect the battery to reset the code. If the code never came back again then it is fixed.

Nissan xterra knock sensor

It's the valley of the engine underneath the intake manifold. It's about an $800 job because the top of the engine has to come off. However, unless you have a supercharged xterra it shouldn't effect performance. Also, the knock sensor will not trip the check engine light, as it does not indicate a primary problem, so if your light is on you should have another code that should be fixed first.
