SOURCE: ABS Light / Sensor on 1996 Ford Explorer

the rear one is a single sensor and is located in the top of the rear differential , unplug it and take the retaining bolt out and it pops straight up out of the differential. the front has 1 for each wheel, and is located on the backside of the wheel hub. take the tire off and look on back side of hub it should be the only sensor thare and is anchored with one bolt then just fallow the wire to its disconnect point. this vehicle is known to have problems with the rear sensor so i would replace it first and see if this fixes the problem

Why does my ABS light come on sometimes, and what does ABS stand for?

ABS- anti lock braking system. When the light comes , the ABS is disabled. You still have brakes though. It is caused by one tire trying to stop faster than the others. Snow, sand, and gravel can cause this. It could also be a wheel bearing getting worn out, eventually you will start hearing noise from it(starts as a low pitched hum, especially when turning). Could be the sensor on the bearing also.

2005 ford explorer ABS and AdvanceTrac warning light stay on

There could be many issues with this light on, only a professional scan tool or the FORD dealer has an OBD scanner that can talk to the ABS module. From a look at some common problems, people have changed the front wheel speed sensors to fix this problem.

When taking off truck hesitates or slips?

You need to check the ABS Sensors for dirt & possibly
metal attracted to them

Both front & back

If you have Tone Rings--the things with all the teeth on
the axles or wheel hub, that the sensors are very close to

Check them for cracks around their diameter

You will have an ABS light on your dash until you
fix the issue

You could just have a bad sensor & the off-road venture
wasn't the problem

Do not throw parts at it,clean sensors first & check
for damaged wiring

You may need to see the snappy tool truck for the
correct metric torx driver bit or driver allen wrench
to remove & clean.

Something like a T-20 or 6mm Hex-- not found at sears
hardware-- only tool trucks

Ford uses a sensor for brake fluid, to test disconnect from Master Cylinder and connect the leads together. If light goes out, replace the sensor.

Have similar problem after changing brakes

if this has rear abs,the sensor on the rear axle housing might be bad.low brake fluid can also cause the abs light to come on.check the resistance of the rear abs sensor.if it reads more than 100 ohms,or is open, replace it.
