Question about Chevrolet S 10

1 Answer

1987 Chevy Blazer Vortec 4.3 engine. Replaced: distributor cap, plugs, plug wires, coil. Runs rough when in gear, but idles fairly smoothly and revs well with tranny in park. Sometimes blows a bit of black smoke. I can smell unburned fuel heavily in the exhaust. Is this a pickup coil issue?

If it didn't do that before you changed the wires, check that you don't have two in the wrong places.

    Hi thun,

Thanks for getting back. It was running like crap before then. Anyway, I found out how to access the error codes and got a "43", "which is knock sensor or electronic spark control circuit fault".

    Hmmm....

Anyway, as to the plug wire issue, I checked them very thoroughly several times, and they are indeed in the right spots. The problem seems to be no advance in the timing, and I'm wondering if this is the ignition control module or the pickup coil.

87 with a vortec? Is it a vin z 4.3 with Throttle body Injection?

  • billisaacs Jun 06, 2010

Sorry thun, it's not an 87 after all. It's a 92. Yes, it is a TBI Vortec.

  • billisaacs Jun 06, 2010

I've confused some people here today, LOL. I just picked this truck up yesterday and it is a 92, I've just discovered, not an 87. Sorry about that. It does have throttle body injection.

OK, let me catch y'all up on this. csmock asked about the 8th digit, and it is a W, not a Z. Guys I apologize, I'm new to this vortec thing. So it turns out that it is a CBI, not TBI according to the Autozone website. I hope this clears things up for y'all.

  • billisaacs Jun 06, 2010

thanks csmock. I'll check that. How would I clear the error code?

You will have a code 43 if you had the spout connector unhooked to check the timing. If you clear the code and it comes back and you still have no advance I would replace the ignition module.

So its a vin z right?

The problem you are describing is a real common problem with the vin W engine so I just want to make sure where are on the same wavelength.

O.K. Vin W is a Central Port Injection engine. These are common for fuel leaks in the intake from the fuel lines and the pressure regulator. That is likely where your black smoke and rough idle is coming from. You need to remove the upper intake and check for fuel leaks inside the intake.

Just unhook the battery for 1 minute.

1987 chevy r20 rough idle

Well, the computer is supposed to open the IAC to keep the RPM above 600 or so depending on the load on the engine.
If you have voltage and ground for the IAC it should raise idle speed to at least 1100 when you first start the engine cold.
If that is not happening, I would look for carbon build up in the throttle body. You can apply voltage to the IAC and open it to see if the air passage is open too.

Check the plug wire from the ignition coil to the distributor cap.
If you haven't already, replace the distributor cap and rotor.
The GM Vortec's have issues with moisture getting inside the cap and rotor and causing problems.

I have a 95 chevy blazer with the 4.3 .i have tested and have spark entering the distributor but no spark leaving the distributor to plugs .have put new crank sensor ,cam pos sensor...

That is indeed odd. I would suspect problems with the hi tension cables if this was not part of the ones you changed since the flow of current ends at the distributor. Check also other cables such as the ground. It is puzzling that all plugs would not have any spark. I would also recommend a scanner used to check for error codes given out by the car's ECU.

Where is distributor cap on 1987 chevy cavalier

the car should have a coil pack...when you changed the plugs and wires they cap would have been at the top end of the plug wires. other wise it wil be at the front of the car where the plug wires or sparkplugs run to
