There should be a button near your shifter labeled 'Shift Lock Override'. Press this and you should be okay until you can get a new relay.

There are a few parts that may be worn causing this problem. The only way to see wich one(s) is to have someone open up the transmission and take a look.

MY REVERSING LIGHTS ARE INTERMITTANT ON MY VOLVO S40 1999 IS IT THE SWITCH AND IF SO WHERE IS IT

The switch that controls the reverse lights is the PNP switch. It is on the top of the trans under the shift link (where the cable connects to it). These switches do fail frequently, however, there are other things that could cause your problem. Since this switch is a good chunk of change, the problem should be carfully diagnosed before replacing it.

My 2003 volvo s40 needs excessive foot pressure to stop in reverse. Why all of a sudden? Stopping forward is fine.

you probably have air on the lines or the brake booster is bad.
try purging out the lines first and see if that helps
