Question about 2005 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

Low compression on one side, one fowled plug

I have a 2005 6 cylinder explorer. After running for a few hours I lose power going up hills. Around town it runs fine. Changed the plugs and the center one on the driver side was fowled and did not help so changed the wires which did not work either. Did a compression check and the garage said the driver side was about 20% lower than the passenger side and the center plug was bad again. Only have 115K miles and have changed the oil on a regular basis which would think is too early for a ring problem. Any ideas to look for before I look into a rebuild? How do you tell if it us a ring or valve issue? the garage said they cant tell.

A compression leak down test would tell you where the compression leak is coming from, and you should call around to find a repair shop that knows what a compression leak down test is.

A burnt or bent intake or exhaust valve, warped cylinder head or faulty head gasket, or a damaged piston or piston compression ring could cause a compression leak, and a leaking intake manifold gasket that allows oil to enter the intake through the lifter valley could foul out a spark plug, and also it could be a damaged piston or broken piston rings that is fouling out the spark plug.

Hi, my Alfa 147 select speed losers power and revs when driving up a hill, also after driving for 30 mins it starts to heat up a little.

losing power going up hill is a sign of low cylinder compression ,that and ther over heating points to the head gasket being blown , i'd suggest getting the cylinder compressions tested and the coolant checked for any sign of contamination from the engine gases etc , this will require specialist garage equipment , keep me posted if you wish

Troubleshooting a rough idle

Have the engine computer scanned for trouble codes. Misfires are from loss of fuel, spark, or compression. Check the fuel pressure, check that all spark plugs are getting spark, and if all good so far, test engine compression. Low compression in a cylinder will cause misfires and loss of power.

It could also be a vacuum leak- a loose or cracked vacuum hose or an intake gasket leak.

Why does it lose power going up hill and fine on level ground

if the transmission dont slip that means the engine lacks power.
(torque)
this can be from forgetting to do tune ups>? every 60k miles. or per the operators guide, some cars need spark plugs every 30k did you RTM read the manual yet>? please do.
in order of likely (not physics)
bad spark (misfire) induced low power.
bad fueling lean
bad fueling too rich. (more misfire spark plugs turn black (tips)
bad engine. (compression loss)
the rare CAT melted, (inside) and getter worse.

to solve a riddle we do tests. simple tests with simple tools.

1986 Honda Civic 4WD Wagon with carberated 1500 engine. Engine loses power after a short time at high power output like on the freeway going up hill or lower speeds on steep hills. After pulling over on...

SOUNDS LIKE IT MIGHT BE STARVING OF FUEL . FUEL PRESSURE MIGHT BE GOOD , THE VOLUME FROM THE PUMP AT IDLE MIGHT BE GOOD , BUT IF THS FLOAT IN THE CARBURETTOR IS CLOSING OF THE CHECK VALVE TO EARLY . THE ENGINE WILL NOT SUSTAIN HIGH SPEED OR HIGHER ENGINE RPM .

Ck engine light is on and miss fire #5

There are few possibilities that can cause engine misfire issues. It can be issue with spark plugs or faulty spark plugs. Also get the compression test done for cylinders. If any of cylinder shows low compression then required, then that particular cylinder will cause misfire.

Also get obd codes scanned, the error code will let you know which cylinder is misfiring or all cylinders are misfiring.

It loses power on acceleration and serious loss of power on hills

sounds like a clogged fuel filter. you need to have the engine pressure checked for leaks, you can rent the pressure checker at autozone, it connects to ur radiator and u pump pressure into the cooling system if u find water leaking around the head u know u have a blown head gasket. if ok then check the cylinder compression should beable to rent this also. it screws into the spark plug holes has a gauge on it. alternator problem w/ the light is probaly you need to tighten the belt.hope this helps!!!

Stalls at low speed when in cruise control

You sould have recieved a "recall" notice in the mail about the cruise control for fire and failure issues. they are adding a fusable link where the cruise control harness connects to the brake master cylinder. if you have not had the recall performed yet you should SERIOUSLY consider getting it done, mainly so it doesnt catch fire, but "could" be the result of the failure you've been experiancing! btw, almost ALL Ford vehicles have been affected with the cruise control recall. hope this helps!
