Yes you can bend valves when the timing belt breaks. Without knowing the car call your dealer up and ask them if this is a problem for your year and make a model car. European and Japanese cars and also high performance cars are more likely to have this problem. But not all cars for instance most Ford escorts do not have valve interference problems. But if you replace the timing belt and the car Mises or backfires you probably have a bent valve. And you would need a valve job that this point. Good luck.

If time belt breaks does it hurt the valves on

Yes, it bends them. The valves stay still, some will be in the open (down position) and the piston comes up and bashes them.

If the timing belt is easy to replace, you can try it. If not, you might as well remove the head and check, clean the combustion chambers, clean and lap the valves whilst you have it stripped down. Get yourself a workshop manual.

Drive belt broken, car will not start

Hi,when the timing belt brakes it allows the pistons to crash into the valves in the head so they bend or brake,as a quick whay to find out what damage has been done, buy a new timing belt and set the timing then get a compresion tester and do each cylinder at a time and see what the values are,it will let you know how maney valves are bent or broken if any, also if the valves are bent or broken they may of damaged inside the head, sorry about your problem hope you get it sorted out and dose not cost alot to fix,all the best.

My timing belt broke on my 2002 dodge neon. did it bend the valves

This is not an interference engine and braking timing belt will not bend valves.

Is it common to bend a valve when timing belt brakes

It is very common. If a vehicle is driven or even just started for that matter you run the risk of the the valves impacting the pistons and bending the valves or cracking the pistons. If you are due for the manufactures recommended timing belt replacement, do it, the cost of preventative maitenance is far cheaper then an engine overhaul

Is the 4 cyl engine interference or free spin if timming belt brakes

If this is the 2.4L engine then it is an interference engine and will bend valves and/or cause damage to the cylinder head should the timing belt fail.

If the belt is turning the bottom and top end in time,no problem.Break a belt and the top end stops with the some valves open and some closed, meantime the bottom end keeps going around and around and the pistons up and down until the engine not only quits but continues until the vehicle is either put in neutral or until it comes to a stop, either way the damage is dune with-in the first seconds of the belt breaking, sorry for the news but this is true of all overhead valve engines.

1998 kia sportage. changed timing belt. now no compression.

WOW - DID THE BELT BREAK WHILE IT WAS RUNNING IF SO THE VALVES ARE BEND THATS WHY YOU HAVE NO COMPRESSION.
IF YOU HAD THE BELT REPLACED AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE TIMING MARKS RIGHT YOU CAN STILL BEND THE VALVES.
9 TIMES OUT OF 10 THE DAMAGE IS JUST TO THE VALVES AND NOT THE HEAD OR ENGINE. BUT IF YOU HAVE TO PULL THE HEAD MY ADVISE IS TO HAVE THE HEAD CHECKED FOR CNY CRACKS
