According to the manual for a EJ25:

Bolt sequence:
| C A F |
| E B D |
1) Install the cylinder head and gaskets on cylinder block.

• Replace cylinder head gaskets with new ones.
• Be careful not to scratch the mating surface of cylinder block and cylinder head.

2) Tighten the cylinder head bolts.

(1) Apply a coat of engine oil to the washers and bolt threads.
(2) Tighten all bolts to 29 N·m (3.0 kgf-m, 22 ftlb) in alphabetical sequence.
(3) Tighten all bolts to 69 N·m (7.0 kgf-m, 51 ftlb) in alphabetical sequence.
(4) Back off all bolts in reverse order of assembly by 180° first; back them off by 180° again.
(5) Tighten bolts A and B to 34 Nm and bolts C-D to 15 Nm
(6) Tighten all bolts by 90°
(7) Tighten all bolts a further 90°

Do not tighten bolts more than 90° in total angle

How I change the spark plugs to legacy 95 grand wagon? engine EJ25 thank's

If it's a single overhead cam engine, which I'm guessing it is, all you have to do is remove the washer reservoir from the drivers side and pull the spark plug boots out to expose the spark plug tube. You do the same thing on the other side, but you just take out the air box/tubes. 5/8 spark plug socket, 6inch 3/8 drive extension and 3/8 drive ratchet. Pull all 4 spark plugs out, put 4 new ones in and reassemble everything in reverse order of removal. Good luck and have fun!!

96 subaru legacy starter problem

I have run into this problem. The installation location of the starter is very critical to have a good ground. On the EJ25 motors the way the starter mounts with one bolt to the trans and the other through the trans to the block makes it difficult to get a really good ground. I would make sure you have a nice clean secure ground. Hope this solves your problem, nothing worse than having a Subie and not being able to use it. Good luck.

Timing marks and procedures

If it is the 2.5 EJ25 motor the marks ar on the cover and pulleys. Top pulleys are Single line straight up and double straight down which should line up with bottom pulleys double marks. This should line up the single lines on bottom pulleys with 90 degree mark on outer cover both sides. The center pulley for crank should be straight up with notch in block.
