Question about 1998 Ford Windstar
I have a 1998 Ford Windstar 3.8 w/the AX4S transmission. I know there have been alot of problems with this set-up. A couple of months ago I was driving and the transmission starting pouring fluid. I have no idea from where though. We filled it up, I drove it home, then it didn't leak again. Then I was driving to Tampa from Orlando and was near Plant City when I looked out my rearview and noticed fluid all of the back. I figured it was the tranny fluid again so I was going to get off at the next exit and get some fluid. Well, the tranny stopped pulling within that mile or so. Engine began revving to 3k then 4k then I had no forward power at all. I managed to coast off the exit and into a dealer parking lot. I bought so very expensive tranny fluid and put some in and managed to get the van over to the Burger King so the kids and I could wait on my husband to come from Orlando. When he got there he finished filling it up and checked it again. It didn't leak and he followed me the rest of the way to Tampa. Van ran fine the rest of the time and never leaked again. I drove it from my mom's to the Beach and it was fine. Was leaving the beach and rounded a corner and it quit pulling. It wouldn't come out of 1st at all. I could get it to move forward by revving the engine to about 5k then it would **** into gear. I limped it like that into a public parking area.My husband came back down and we had to tow the van back to Orlando. The car would shift fine if the engine was cold but wouldn't do anything once it warmed up. Pulled tranny out and had it rebuilt. Guy put new torque converter in it said the spline were wiped off. We put everything back up in there but are still having same problem. Does anyone know what could cause this?
The transmission has been overheating. the fluid expands and comes out of the vent tube on top of trans. thats why it dont leak all the time. check for kinked cooler hoses or a plugged cooler inside radiator.
