Question about 1995 Mitsubishi Diamante

I have no power going up hills. i have 3 coil packs, middle one is not firing and it is brand new, hard shifting on flat rpm gets really high b4 shifting. car sometims dies when turning sharp or backing up.

The coils,if they set on the ignition module,then the module is the problem,if they do not,then the coil may be defective.

I guess its not so much a back fire but bad misfire. will not go up a hill keeps lurching ahead under the misfire...


Often it takes a load to bring out the misfire like hard acceleration or climbing a hill, did you check the spark plug boots on the coils for signs of burning or other damage of any kind.

My 2006 gp gxp 5.3 was missing. I related all the plugs, wires and 3 coil packs. Now the rpms run higher than normal and it shifts gears hard.


If the engine ran too long while missing it may have blown the cat converter, how ever the high rpm may not be related to that. Look for a connection you may have missed. High rpm can be caused by vacuum leak or a sensor disconnected

Have you checked for a broken valve spring. Repaired a dodge engine with the same running issue as you have described and it was a broken intake valve spring.

VW 2013 Golf Automatic stays in 1st gear when driving uphill. Have to pull over after hill, stop, park and then go for engine to autocorrect. VW service center mechanic says this is how it's supposed to be...


There is no problem with the revs going to 3 or 6. The revs need to climb so you have enough power to climb the hill (if the car upshifts under heavy load it may stall). But are you saying that the only way you can get it to shift out of first is to turn off the car? if so, then that is obviously not supposed to happen. It should shift shortly after you start driving down hill.

Conditions: Make sure your engine is cold, or it'll be hot on your hands
you have 6 Ignition coil packs. 3 up front and 3 near your firewall. (when asking for new ones, they are referred to as L and R)

3 are hidden behind the plastic piece on your engine that says NISSAN... simply remove the bolts and remove the plastic piece.

once removed, you should see 3 coil packs. un plug and test them one at a time.

I won't go into how to remove them since it should be fairly obvious Simply remove both bolts (do one coil pack at a time...) and pull the coil pack out. i had one where it was very hard to get out... so you may have to pull hard...

Once out, look at the area where you removed the electrical plug. You should see a "+" on the back end of the electrical plug. There should also be the letter "B"....
the spot where you see the positive symbol, means that's prong number one on the electrical connector.

To test:
Turn on your ohmmeter and place the positive wire on the 1st prong in the electrical plug of the coil pack. The negative wire should be touching the middle prong. Verification of the ohmmeter at this time should say "0" aka infinite... if it's anything else, the pack should be changed. Next test: reverse the wires... positive on the middle prong and negative on the 1st prong.... on a new coil pack, it should give a value of approximately 1.3-1.7 mega ohms. If any of the readings are off, replace the coil pack.

Note: Firewall coil packs are extremely easy to find, simply look in the cracks of the intake header. you'll see 3 similar looking coil packs to the front ones. The exception with these is that they are longer and look a slight bit different. removal is the same process as the front coil packs. Simply pay special attention to not dropping the screws in the intake area... it'll be hard to get out.

to test: follow the front coil pack testing method. Look for the Positive symbol, this is your first prong... and go from there.

Power loss at 4000 rpm


anything over 4K is pretty much above the useful torque curve of the engine. Therefore more rpm's will not do you as much good as you might think. If you intend to do any hill-climbing, you will need to begin by changing both front and rear gearsets (if you have say, 3:23's, go to 4:11's etc) You will also need to do some engine mods such as a different camshaft, headers etc. (this will alter torque curve)
Factory gears are generally installed to accommodate a certain region where the vehicle was originally sold. If the region is flat, then the gears will not work well in high terrain.
If you are not hill climbing and just have occasional problems with hills, There isn't really much you can do about it especially if you have a four cylinder in there. One thing though is that if you have oversized tires, get rid of them...they change your final drive ratio and definitely will influence your performance.

With normal acceleration the 1st to second shift point should be around 2500-3000 rpm. Most of your shifts under moderate acceleration will take place at this same point or when there a light load on the transmission. Under hard acceleration the RPMs will climp higher due to increased power needs and the computer will shift when less power is needed or the RPMs climb to an unsafe speed say5000-6000rpms (depending on where yours redlines). Also going up a steep hill will raise the RPMs higher and goind down a hill will cause a faster shift at lower RPMs. These can always be altered by an individual owner by adjusting shift points, using performance parts and if you have problems (low tranny fluid/trans issues). Your trans RPMS are fine and will vary depening on how your foot accelerates. The shift pattern should be the same every time you drive slow/medium/fast/, look for changes in those patterns you will also catch a problem early.

cannot be specific, had a 98 (now a 99). remember they fire twice- compression and exhaust. if you don't get and answer soon, look up firing order and everyother one should fire together, limiting combinations to two. It doesn't care what stroke it is on
