As long as the nose on the starter is not longer than the other one it should fit(check the distanse on the bendix or gear part make sure its the same distance

Put new starter in 87 chevy 4x4 now have no power to anything

You more than likely didn't get all the wires back on the big stud on the stater. There should be one or two along with the battery cable.

Do you know how to test the stater not the starter the stater????

The stater is the stationary part of the altenator. It can fail but seldom does the rotor and the conn faill as do the brushes. If the altenator is not putting out 14.5 volts take it to the auto parts store and have it tested and buy a rebuilt unit if it's bad if you havn't got the $30 or so my parts store charges for that cars altenator then a junkyard may charge $25 a stator new will cost $40 an dthen you need to install it.

Walmart shop people are not the sharpest knives in the drawer...Company "rules" prevent even the better ones from doing any real proper testing of any problems even inches from the battery.
Your friend was actually doing the right thing but stopped short of finding the "somewhere". You can go over it again or bring it to a competent shop that can do it for you.

The stater is still good but i took off to clean.when i put back does not start the car.the starter is working.what i can do.

Chances are the teeth on the starter are hitting the flywheel. You may have installed it a little crooked. Take it off and try to put it on a little different. Make sure all your connections are where they belong! P.s. I have never heard of cleaning a starter... Don't fix it if it Ain't Broke!

I would suspect the igniter is defective or possibly the coil.
