Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

Slight overheating in traffic,goes up 2 notches over half way mark.coolant pushed out of overflow bottle,engine heats too long before the fans chip in.temperature stays at halfway mark on highway.thermostat was changed,system flushed and new coolant added.

These vehicles, when equipped with the 3.1L engine are very prone to head gasket failure. A local garage should be able to preform a block check to tell wether combustion gasses are entering the coolant. Because you said the coolant pushed out the overflow this is definately where i would start. The normal operation of that vehicle is for the fans to turn on around 106 degrees celcius. If you can, take a temperature reading of the coolant to ensure they are coming on at the right temp. Other possibilities are an inefficient radiator, coolant temp switch/sensor causing inproper fan on temperature,

Mini Cooper temperature gauge goes to red zone when idle


check coolant level could be too low allowing air in the cooling system causing air pocket in engine around the engine coolant sensor.coolant sensor needs to be in hot coolant so it will cause the cooling fan to come on at a set temperature.make sure coolant correct level and the coolant level in the cooling overflow jug should be at full cold mark.the cooling overflow jug should never be empty,if you see empty cooling overflow jug air got in the cooling system so make sure when engine cold every time raise hood make sure cooling overflow jug coolant level at full cold mark.if jug stay empty you have cooling leak.so replace radiator cap,if coolant level all good,i would replace the engine coolant temperature and thermostat.when your car come to a long stop or driving along long line of slow moving traffic the engine coolant blower motor should running if not have vechicle code scan for faulty coolant fan motor control module.or ecm problems.

The car is overheating but ck eng light not coming on. The transmission catches hard intermittently. The rpms seem to be running higher than normal.


check for low coolant level.check coolant overflow jug if it is empty, more likely air is in the coolant system.add more coolant to overflow jug until coolant level stay at cold full mark,dont over fill coolant overflow jug.if all is good, to be on the safe side, replace radiator cap,replace thermostat,if your engine overheat at a long slow driving traffic.or long stop idling, if cooling fan dont turn on more likely engine coolant temperature sensor could be faulty.

I have a 1999 oldsmobile intrigue with a 3.5 engine and it is overheating what might be the problem?


It's usually the thermostat, I woud pressure test the cap. It may need to be flushed. Are the fans working? Is there a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze

2001 chevy cavalier, was overheating and took out thermostat, let it idle then was not over heating,bought new thermostat put it in then overheated what do i do?


Physically look in the radiator under the cap(if one exsist's) when cool, for coolant level, and check the valve in the cap for sticking. If air is present in the radiator it can't get out, and more coolant can't get in,(from the overflow). Either clean the cap or replace it and check that it is the CORRECT cap.

If radiator is low on coolant fill it to overflowing, replace cap, and check that coolant overflow is filled to the COLD line or mark. The overflow is normally where you would add coolant. (never overfill the overflow)After refilling as outlined above, check the level every morning for 2 or 3 days until coolant level stops dropping below the cold mark and add coolant to the overflow ONLY. Do not open the radiator cap. Also, if you have even a tiny coolant leak anywhere in the system, air will get drawn in, instead of coolant from the overflow.

Radiator fins dirty, clean with a strong stream of water, not high pressure water.
Radiator clogged, try backflushing it, or replace.
Thermostat stuck open or shut, replace it.
Water pump worn out, can no longer move enough coolant, replace it.

93 lincoln mark v111 antifreeze radiator, how do i bleed air out of rad, coolant from coolant bottle into radiator?


When you top off the radiator you fill it to the neck where the cap goes. When the engine heats up the antifreeze eventually will distribute and the excess will go into the overflow bottle.

After the car cools, it will draw the antifreeze from the overflow tank into the radiator. Then check the level line on the overflow bottle(tank) for the normal amount of antifreeze per marks on the bottle.

You should have your radiator cap checked for its pressure rating. Use the type of cap which allows for an overflow system. The older caps would not let the antifreeze flow both ways.

Overheating, guage not over 1/2 mark, overflow smells like exhast


Have you tried running car from cold, with rad cap off, & heater turned on, coolant topped up, an inch or 2 from top of rad? Let it run up to operating temperature, cooling fans kick in & out 2 or 3 times, and top up coolant as needed, then put rad cap back on, & fill return bottle up to mark. There may be a worse problem, but bleeding system as I have described, ensures all air out of heater core & cooling system, which has been cause many times before on all makes & models of vehicles. Especially when no heat situation. Let me know if it helps.

If car heats up quickly and overheats , the problem is the thermostat. The thermostat stays closed and traps coolant in the engine untill it reaches about 185 degrees , than the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow to the radiator where it is cooled by airflow. ( airflow while driving is usually sufficient ) while idling , or in slow trafic , the fan keeps air moving through the rad. The heater core is strictly for heat in the winter inside the car. The thermostat is the most likely cause of the problem , and even if it was good before , the overheat / boil situation likely cooked it anyways. I am assuming the water pump is still getting turned by a belt. No water circulation by pump would cause same symptom as bad thermostat. Overflow and expansion bottles are designed several different ways on different cars , but the theory is that as the engine heats up and the coolant expands , it goes to the tank. Later , as engine cools down after being shut off , coolant contracts. Radiator is replenished by coolant returning from expansion bottle.
