How do you loosen a power steering tensioner on a 86 Chevy caprice?

I've got an 85 2.5 celebrity and am assuming that your 86 is similar. Most people might think this is a incorrect question, but I've spend hours trying to locate all the bolts to loosen. The alternator belt is straightforward. Loosen the alternator bolt in located in the slider portion and the pivot bolt (15mm on mine). The compressor belt is straightforward. Loosen the two compressor adjustment bolts in the slider slot and the loosen the pivot bolt. This belt will be hard to remove even with the compressor fully pushed down. Take some vitamins. The worse belt by far is the power steering belt. Loosen the pivot bolt on the bottom of the power steering "canister". There are two adjustment bolts to loosen from my memory. The one that is easy to find is on the engine side of the power steering canister. The other is hard to see but is located on the pulley side between two of the pulleys. It's also hard to get a wrench on. But, you've got to find and loosen this bolt. I cringe when this belt breaks. Good Luck!!

How to replace the power steering belt on a 4g13

ADJUSTMENT

Excessive belt tension will cause damage to the alternator and water pump pulley bearings, while, on the other hand, loose belt tension will produce slip and premature wear on the belt. Therefore, be sure to adjust the belt tension to the proper level.
To adjust the tension on a drive belt, loosen the adjusting bolt or fixing bolt locknut on the alternator, alternator bracket or tension pulley. Then move the alternator or turn the adjusting bolt to adjust belt tension. Once the desired value is reached, secure the bolt or locknut and recheck tension.

How to change the power steering belt on a 2004 mitsubishi galant

The power steering belt is on the front of the motor and is driven by the crankshaft. Below the steering pump is an adjuster bolt. It moves a pulley underneath the pump. To adjust the belt tension located the nut that tightens the adjuster pulley the the pump bracket . It is on the right side of the bracket , the pulley is on the left facing the back of the car. Loosen the pulley mount nut . You can now turn the adjuster bolt to move the pulley to tighten and loosen the belt for replacement. I recommend replacing the alternator belt at the same time. To do this , Unhook the negative battery cable, loosen the bolt holding block to the slide arm, reach under the alternator and loosen the lower mount bolt, not you can adjust the position of the alternator using the adjuster bolt.

1.9L Engines The accessory drive belt for 1.9L engines has no provision for manual belt adjustment, since these engines use an automatic belt tensioner. Drive belt slack is taken up by the automatic tensioner. NOTE: Movement of the automatic tensioner assembly during engine operation is not a sign of a malfunctioning tensioner. This movement is the tensioner self-adjusting and is required to maintain constant belt tension. Fig. 5: Drive belt routing — 1.9L engines 86751052.gif
2.0L Engines The accessory drive belt for 2.0L engines has no provision for manual belt adjustment, since these engines use an automatic belt tensioner. 10. Install the thermostat with a new gasket.
  11. Install the idler pulley.
  12. Install the timing belt.
  13. Install the drive belts and adjust the tension.
  14. Refill the cooling system and check for leaks.
2RZ-FE and 3RZ-FE Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. If equipped with an air conditioning compressor or power steering pump drive belts, it may be necessary to loosen the adjusting bolt, remove the drive belt(s) and move the component(s) out of the way.
