1996 Cadillac Sedan Deville that overheats only when idling

Hi I have a 1996 Cadillac Sedan Deville that has been overheating only when idling or going slow.
The temp goes to about 223 and shuts the motor off. When going down the road it is fine, I am assuming this is from the wind keeping it cool enough. Have had the coils and ignition module checked and they are ok but it (the module) do not get as hot on the machine as it does on the car. Just had the radiator flushed also. What could the problem be? It shuts down every time around that temperature.

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Need to check the impella on the back of the water pump for corosion. may have loss a couple of fins. need to check for unrestricted water/coolant flow or lack there of. bleed all air out of cooling system use a funnel or something to get the water your putting in above the highest point of the engine and bleed the air out (temp sensors dont like steam readings)

Hi Malik,
Thank you for choosing me to help you with your problem. In order to help you find out what to do with your Cadillac, I need to ask a few questions and get more information.
First, I need to ask you: When you turn the A/C on do BOTH cooling fans come on? If not, which one is coming on? The Left (driver's side) or the Right one?

Problem with overheating on 1996 Cadillac Deville with Northstar engine. The information screen read "engine overheating", "idle engine" and "change oil" all within one minute. Are these issues related...

The oil life resets to zero after the engine overheats. Check for external leaks first, make sure the water pump belt is still there and turning. The most likely cause if the car has over 70,000 miles is head gaskets.
