ENGINE TORQUE DISTRIBUTION – DIRECTING THE FLOW OF POWER
In an all-wheel-drive vehicle, engine power can be directed to all four wheels. Subaru Symmetrical AWD differs slightly from model to model in how it directs power to the wheels, depending on its transmission.

MODELS WITH FIVE-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION – CONTINUOUS ALL-WHEEL DRIVE: A viscous-type locking center differential and limited-slip rear differential help distribute torque – normally configured at a 50/50 split front to rear. If wheel speed differs between front and rear axles, the center and/or rear differentials lock up to help distribute power to the wheels with the most traction.

MODELS WITH FOUR-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS – ACTIVE ALL-WHEEL DRIVE: An electronically controlled variable transfer clutch and limited-slip rear differential distribute power to where traction is needed. Sensors monitor parameters such as wheel slippage, throttle position, and braking to help determine torque distribution and direct it to the wheels with optimum traction.

MODELS WITH FIVE-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION – VARIABLE TORQUE DISTRIBUTION ALL-WHEEL DRIVE: As with Active All-Wheel Drive, an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch distributes power, but through a planetary-type center differential and a viscous-type limited-slip rear differential. Torque distribution is normally configured at a performance-oriented rear-wheel-biased 45/55 split front to rear. Sensors monitor the same parameters as for Active All-Wheel Drive.

WRX STI, WITH SIX-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION – DRIVER CONTROLLED CENTER DIFFERENTIAL (DCCD) ALL-WHEEL DRIVE: The STI uses an electronically managed multi-plate transfer clutch and a mechanical limited-slip differential in conjunction with a planetary-gear-type center differential to control power distribution between the front and rear wheels. Featuring manual and three automatic modes, DCCD is normally configured at a 41/59 split front to rear. Sensors monitor parameters such as wheel slippage, steering angle, throttle position, and braking to help determine torque distribution and direct it to the wheels with optimum traction. And what are the symptoms? How do you know the coupling to the rear is not working?

Thanks for the useful summary Kirk. My 1998 Legacy Lancaster (Japanese version of the Outback) is the 5 speed auto - I've jacked up front and rear wheels on one side and confirmed there is no drive to the rear in any gear including reverse. The driveshaft, rear diff and wheels are all connected OK, just no connection via the transfer case to the transmission. Just the occasional thump on hard acceleration when it feels like the rear wheels briefly kick in.

It sounds like you have to replace your manual clutch with a refurbished one.

    What do you mean by a manual clutch? It's the 5 speed auto, full time AWD and sadly no controls to switch 4WD on or off. (This is standard with this model).

I'm hearing a load thumping sound from the rear end when I turn.


If this problem just started recently it sounds like possible rear brake problem(for safety). Most likely if this only happens while turning could be a differential (positraction) problem. Have the rear-end oil changed and or there is a oil additive that helps this(cluch plates rubbing) problem. Good luck, best regards.

We just bought a 2000 Suzuki esteem, the problem is whenever we start the car, it becomes very difficult to shift between gears when the car is idle, but when the car is on the freeway, shifting works...


The cluch not fully disingaging , ( carpet under the pedel, pedel bent , bushing worn out of pedal, low on fluild in clutch master ( brake fluid ) and bad cluch master or slave or air in system. A damaged clutch will drag too. If it shifts OK with the car shut off standing still trans lube is likly OK too. If it has a clutch cable it may need to be adjusted pull up on the clutch pedal as high as it can go then pust down with your hand it should only go down an inch before it gets harder to pust down as it openes the clutch and shoul continue to go down about 4 or more inches. The pedal should be as high or a little higher than the break paedal. If not the pedal height may be needing to be adjusted higher. Some slave master hydrolic sysems aren't adjusted and have to be replaced to fix lack of enought movement Clutes that are hard to pust in or get much harder as you get closer to the floor the cluch is likly to be worn out and need to be changed with a new clutch kit and resurface the flywheel. The flywheel can change to unflatand the cluch can drag. engine oil getting into the clutch though a leak in the valve cover or rear main can get on the cluch and make it drag and grab.

My mk4 golf cuts out when clutch is applied,not every time but enough times to make me concerned and frustrated.


oh dear, you drive with your foot on the cluch then? or hold the cluch down at the lights insted of knocking it out of gear? never hold down the cluch for more that 30 seconds at a time,,,,,naughty naughty! this is just one of the prices you pay for that,
its you cluch release bearing, its seised up on you, cluch riding dose that! its only a little bearing!!!!!
the fix is a new cluch bearing, but what it costs to take the gear box out to replase the bearing it would be cheeper in the long run to have a compleat new cluch fitted, and then lurn not to ride the new cluch as much,,,,and all this just to pull away a fuw seconds faster??? this is a £350-£500 job now

Hi, I'm interested in buying a 1985 Land Rover Defender V8.Owner says the clutch is slipping when engine is warm. What is required to fix this and what would approximate cost be?


aftermarket clutch kits for this vehicle run $500-750 and about the same for labor to remove transmission and service clutch and plate...allow $1500 for this repair.Dealer price for parts and labor could double this estimate...good luck

Try adding a can of freon, you might have a leak, the clutch will not work if not enough pressure in ac system

1000 pounds sounds a bit rich, just4 parts. sounds like you needto shop around,if you get someone to fix it look at the clutch plate or pressure plate you might be able to re use them, to save money . you should get about 135 kms out of of a clutch
