Question about 1996 Audi A6

96 Audi A6 temp gauge will not go into the normal operating range. will go about the 1/2 way point and stay there will not go up or down any further no matter what I try. Have replaced water pump, themrostat, multi function sensor, coolant sensor and fan sensor. Fans stay on w/AC operating and do not seem to come on at all without the AC. Car just overheated once about 3 weeks ago. Any ideas at all?

Ok.Try this. Pull the temperature gauge out and use a jumper wire to ground it somewhere. If this
works, you've a bad ground. If not, replace the gauge.

With the wire completely
grounded to the engine block, the temperature gauge should
go well into the normal range if not all the way to the hot
range. If the gauge does not rise, that is an indication
that there is an electrical problem with the gauge or the
electrical circuit. Check the voltage from the sender wire
to ground. If I recall correctly, you should have
approximately 5 volts at that point. However it is possible
to have as much as system voltage at that point. I do not
recall which it is on your particular application. The
important thing is whether or not there is  voltage. If you
have the correct voltage at the sender, then a replacement
sender should return to gauge to proper operation. If it
does not, you likely have a defective gauge that will
require replacement. The gauges on that vehicle are
supplied in pairs, such that you've to buy another gauge
in addition to the temperature gauge which other gauge is
dependent upon your particular instrument panel
configuration. If I recall correctly, it is not possible
for the paired gauge to work properly, and the other not
work properly if there is no voltage present on one or the
other of the gauges. You can also test the temperature
sending unit by checking it with an ohm meter. Do this by
checking the sender for resistance before starting the
engine when it is cold. Checked the resistance again when
engine is completely warmed. You should see a drastic
reduction in the resistance reading.

    OK that al makes sense especially after replacing every other coolant sensor there is. My question now would be how do I get the gauge off to check it. I understand that these come on the cluster but I am at a loss to find a way to pull it out of the dash.

Sound like either the Thermometer Housing, Thermometer or water pump may be in trouble.

If no leaks you can rule out the Thermometer Housing.
But regardless you will need to replace all three if any one is bad.
And the timing Belt while you are in there,
Only because it a 5 hour Minimum Labor job to replace either of them.
And there all right near one another,

A real pain to get to those. Thank you Audi...

in the back of the engine , below intake boot , closer to the pass. side of engine.
seats on top of plastic water flange outlet.

Most cars have to reach operating temp before working right, when the heat comes out of the dash, you are at operating temp. Or about 1 mile down the road, before that , you are still running in choke mode, everything is trying to get the engine temp up, including your trans. And it will stay in low gear till it warms up. This is the easy fix, if that is not the problem, then you have a problem with the computer or TCM, Hope this helps.

The guage and fan speeds work on independant sensors. If you can remove the plastic engine cover and locate the "sending unit" for the gauge disconnect it and restart the engine. The gauge should remain cold and not move. If this is the case replace the sending unit. This should be a single wire sender located in the waterjacket of the intake manifold look in the area where the upper rad hose enters the intake.

It may actually be a coolant temp sensor problem - they do have issues sometimes. I'd replace that before anything else - they're generally inexpensive (in the $20 or less range). If, when you ask for a new one, they ask you which one you want, you need the one for the dash gauge. Some cars have one for the gauge and one for the car's ECU. Your problem is with the one that drives the gauge, so get that one.
