Question about 1994 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Hey there, I have replaced the thermostat on my 1994 Camry LE 3.0 liter, however it still overheats at about 20 miles of city traffic & I must use the heater. I made sure the thermostat opened, checked for leaks, & bled out the air. I noticed that there are 2 water temp. sensors, but only one of mine is connected (one on top)and there is no wire at all anywhere to connect to the other sensor.HELP! it's getting hot driving in FL. with the heat on these days! Thanks A Lot

An engine can overheat due to 2 causes:
1 - the water flow is too small - due to either a failing water pump (replace it) or a clogged radiator (run a radiator cleaning solution).
2 - the fan isn't working as it should (or not at all) - in your case probably not at all since its sensor seems to be not connected.

While driving my f150, cools just fine after 20 miles it starts to overheat at lights

Could be a fan clutch, sticking thermostat, or restriction in the cooling system including air in the system.

94 camry is running hot mainly after running a/c and in traffic

Dpending on how many miles, try changing the thermostat, also could be the ac fan relay not kicking on, the water pump is also in this equation if none of these work.

Does the '94 camry wagon have a timing belt or chain? It's a 4 cylinder.

1994 2.2 liter 4 cylinder is a timing belt, it should be changed every 90,000 miles under moderate driving conditions, under severe driving conditions (stop and go traffic, etc.) it should be changed every 60,000 miles

94 Camry was running fine, suddenly became sluggish

How did you try to obtain the codes? Did you short pins E1 and Te1 in the grey connector under the hood?

When the light comes back on, short the above pins, and get back to us.

Without seeing the codes, I would venbture a guess that you first consider a good tune-up, and use Toyota plugs only. Any other manufacturer will not work very well. I see this every day, new plugs, and the engine runs poor. Toyota plugs fixes it right up. The heat ranges are diffferent in Toyota plugs.
