How a starter works: when you put the contact to the starter an electromagnet is activated which pulls a lever. That lever does 2 things:
1 - makes the starter cog engage the flywheel - the click you hear
2 - activates the contacts that power the motor of the starter and provides additional power to the ignition - this is where your starter fails.
It's cheaper to replace the starter than to fix the contacts.

Truck wont start

Starter fluid won't work if the starter won't turn the engine over.

Get the battery load tested...it may not have enough juice to start the truck but have enough to light up the lights

check your fuses and battery connections at the starter. Is the anti theft light flashing? If it is that's your problem. Wait 10 minutes insert the key...wait for the theft light to go out before trying to start.

if that doesn't work you will need to get the starter checked...which means you will have to take it off.

Why ent there enough power going to my brand new starter motor seems to spin slow when i connect strait from battery

hook a volt meter up to your battery you should see around 12.5 volts. Then crank the engine and see what the voltage drops to. If it drops to less than 12 volts the battery is bad.

78 ford f150 I turn the key, i here the solenoid click and all power in truck is killed. i could wait a few minutes and disconnecdt the negative battery cable and the power would be back. After several...

Are you sure your battery is good and able to take and keep a full charge? The only thing in the start circuit that could cause a big drain on the battery is a shorted starter. But if you can send power and it cranks okay, I don't think you have a bad starter.

Is the ignition key on when you crank it and have no spark? Does your distributor rotor turn when the engine is cranking?

I would try a new solenoid. If it clicks it should send power on to the starter on the big cable. Make sure all battery and ground connections are clean and tight. If still a problem, buy a voltmeter and learn how to do voltage drop tests. This will help find bad connections.

My 98 olds bravada cranks, runs for 2 seconds and then dies. i go to crank it again and i get nothing. all power is gone. tested battery and i have a little over 12 volts. key is also stuck in ignition,...

This may be a long shot, but try re-setting your ECM. Remove the negative battery terminal, wait a minute or so and re-fit it. This will re-set the module and return it to default values. From here you can begin diagnosing if you still have problems

No crank, no start, new battery

Hit the starter few times with metal object (hammer or pipe or some sort) while someone else is holding the key in START position. If car starts, your starter is NO GOOD. This is a quick test. There is more testing that you could do, but start there. Whack it with something.

Chech the electrical circuit from the ignition key to the starter motor
To test this circuit an automotive test light is needed.
Attach one end of the test light to engine ground and the other end at the starter trigger terminal of the starter solenoid.
The test light should illuminate when the ignition switch is activated (crank engine over).
If the test light illuminates the starter motor/solenoid has failed and needs to be replaced.
If the test light does not illuminate suspect a neutral safety switch or clutch safety switch if provided.
A wiring diagram is needed to trace power from the ignition switch through the safety switch and down to the starter solenoid.
Replace failed components as needed and recheck system.
