It sounds as if two things might be going on (1) your throttle body may require a good cleaning (look for specific product at atuo parts store and follw directions) last the idle control switch may be failing. This is found within the throttle body (to remove you'll need to remove cold air in-let, two srcews and unplug from wiring harness. (while removed use a cleaner where the idle control went and get the carbon out of there)

I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Check the automatic idle control valve and the module that controls it. A cleaning is all it may need.

need more info than what you provided. gonna take a stab in the dark here and guess major vacuum leak. have you done any engine work lately where you disconnected some vacuum hoses or lines? a major vacuum leak will cause irregular idle speed and trip the above stated code and also cause engine to die.

Car do's not idle correct irregular idle

what type of vehicle is it? usually an irregular idle is caused by a vacuum leak (high idle for the most part) now a surge could be a problem in your coolant sytem it will need to be bled to stop the surgeing and this is usually a long and slow surge but if your surge is quick or rapid this would most likely be your iac (idle air control) valve typically located on the throttle body. a quick way to check if its working is to take the tubing off and put your finger over the first hole in the body see if its sucking (should be very strong vacuum pressure) reply with more details on the vehicle and whats going with it.

Why does my car idle up and down

This is called idle surge, do the following to correct it 90% of the time. Read the many symptoms and then do the procedure exactly as outlined by nme in the article I wrote about this.

Here are the common cause of idle surge, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours.

To correct this problem I want you to get a can of intake cleaner (ABOUT $5.00) from any local auto parts store like NAPA or Carquest, do not use carburetor spray, intake cleaner only or u will damage the Teflon coating inside the throttle valve and air bypass valve, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won

Why does my engine keeps shutting down and sometimes have an irregular or fluctuating rpm reading?

If this happen only when the car is at idle it's your idle air control valve if it happens while your on the gas then it's your throtle position sensor.

1997 328 i convertable the engine lite just went on just bought

When the "Check Engine" light comes on in the 1997 BMW 328iC, the problem is 99% Emissions Systems. First thing to check are the Four (4) Oxygen Sensors. That is correct your convertible has four O2 sensors. They are about $100 to $118 each, online.

I have done this procedure it is not a big deal. It just requires four sensors. More than likely you and your car experience one or several of the following:
  • Engine will not accelerate and backfires
  • Check Engine light is illuminated
  • Irregular idle during warm-up
  • Irregular idle with warm engine
  • Poor engine performance
  • Fuel consumption is high
  • Driving performance is weak
The O2 sensors reduce emissions and tells the computer how to mix your gasoline to air mixture going into your engine.

Since you say you have a 328, they have either two or four O2 sensors. The 1997 BMW 328 Convertible has four. Your chassis style is also referred to as a E36 series. Your engine is a 6 cyl M52.

Good luck

Ralph
