Question about 2003 Lincoln Aviator
I had that same symtop recently, and it turned out to be the catalytic converters. The tell tale sign, will be the exhaust smelling like sulfur. This is a warranty item up until 80k miles. I just had them replaced on my 03 in march of 2011.

Check for a vacuum hose leak, you know for sure you do if you hear a high-pitched squeal in the engine compartment. There are vacuum lines near the rear of the engine near the firewall. Check them for holes that may have opened up from dry rotting tubes.
