If your clutch pedal still feels normal, has the usual amount of resistance when you step on it, then it is time to have the clutch replaced. Once the clutch goes it will be extremely difficult, if even possible, to get the car to go through its gears when running. Don't wait on doing this because every time you "force" it in to gear you are destroying the synchros in the transmission. Keep doing to for too long and then you will need a new clutch AND a new transmission.

so the problem is that you cannot get it into gear from a stop
(grinds trying to force into gear) . if you have a clutch pedal, what I mean is that clutch pedal has pressure behind it,moves up and down by itself, then its a clutch assy needs replaced.clutch disc/pressure plate/release bearing. if there is no pedal, falls to floor, its either clutch slave or clutch master failure issue(lost all fluid). but nothing points at needing a transmission,it should be fine

How Do I change the clutch on a 1986 240 Volvo station wagon?

You do not need a simple "solution" from an online forum. What you need is detailed service information. I would recommend spending the small fee (under $30/year) and subscribing to the service information for your vehicle at alldatadiy.com. There. you will find step-by-step instructions along with diagrams and lists of any special tools needed to complete the task.

I have a 1986 240 five speed. The clutch pedal is hard to push to engage clutch.

If you know any motorcycle riders, you can borrow their cable lubricating tool and an aerosol can of Chain and Cable lube and clamp the tool to the bottom end of the cable and force lubricant up the length of the cable. Throw a rag on the floor of the car beneath the clutch pedal to catch drips. Look for fraying cable at the bottom end of the cable.
Failing that, you can try replacing the cable with a quality (i.e. not made in China) replacement cable. It is a bit of a chore to replace because it is hard to get your hand up to the top of the clutch pedal arm to disconnect and reconnect that cable. Helps to have small hands. The lower end of the cable beneath the car is easy to do if you have the car up on ramps.
There are problems that can happen within the clutch that will make the pedal hard to press, but you probably don't want to tackle that, mostly because the transmission in this car is really heavy and can hurt you when you are taking it out and putting it back. Also, you will need tools that you probably don't currently own. If the problem turns out to be deeper and you do decide to tackle the clutch job yourself, get a couple of strong friends under there with you to pull the transmission out and later to put it back..
