Be sure the right coolant is in the car, orange colored Dexcool. I fthats good, then replace the coolant level sensor, in the right tank of the radiator. near the headlight. Of some cars its easier to replace the sensor if you take the headlight out.

My low coolert light stay on. the gague shows normal oper, and has plenty of anti-freeze

Have you checked the coolant level in the overflow tank/reservoir? If the level is fine the sensor or wiring to it is probably faulty.

My 1997 Saturn SW2 overheated a few weeks ago due to over-reving. Engine temp was bouncing up and down after that. I figured the thermostat went bad as the car has 200k miles on it. Now the coolant level...

plenty of water in the reservoir
none in the radiator
the coolant level sensor is in the radiator and if it is flashing , that indicates no water in the radiator tank and that is the cause of the overheating

My low coolant light comes on and there is plenty of fluid in the radiator. why?

The sensor that detects if the coolant is at a low level may be bad. It will be in the bottom of the coolant overflow tank. Some are screwed into the side or on the bottom.

Is it the LOW coolant light? Your car is equipped with a sensor on the expansion tank (radiator overflow). Right front fender. It's there for when the car heats up. As the engine heats up and the coolant expands it racks into the reservoir/overflow/expansion tank. When the engine cools, it sucks the coolant back in. If your car was low on coolant then there's a good possibility that as it cooled, it sucked the recently added fluid in. Check that it is full to the "cold full" level by looking at the tank before you start it for the day. If it's not, then the sensor is telling you to add coolant. If it is, then the sensor in the tank may be bad.

Low coolant light on but car is full of coolant

check for a shorted sensor, disconnect wires light goes out, = shorted sensor, light stays on = you have a shorted wire, check wire leads to sensor... this should help... please rate my help, thanks

Low Coolant light

Sounds like your sensor unit in your coolant overflow tank. Like nearly everything man made that floats, they will eventually leak (become water logged). This is a relatively cheap fix, as long as the light is coming on and the coolant level in the overflow tank is between the MIN and MAX lines in the overflow tank. This means that the float in there is dropping below the actual fluid level (watter logged) and you need to get a replacement sensor unit (aka sending unit) for the overflow tank.

Otherwise, if the coolant level in the overflow tank IS BELOW the MIN level line on the tank, then you are losing coolant somewhere and that is when things start to get expensive (might be a radiator problem, head gasket, cylinder head, heater core, etc).

The low water light stays on. the car has plenty of water. Its overheating, I know the fan is not coming on. Is the fan motor out or is there a sensor that may cause the problen?

Now you have to find out why the fan motor was fried. The will usually last a very long time. Also your low coolant light and the fan not coming on are totally unrelated.

If the low coolant light comes on and its not low on coolant, then the float inside the tank is sticking. Remove the resevoir tank and clean it our with hot water and dish soap. 9 times out of 10 this frees up the float and you're good to go.

Also Saturn S-Series with the SOHC have head problems, DOHC's usually dont unless they're abused.
