2000 Ford expedition. Rear door latch will not release when unloc

2000 Ford expedition. Rear door latch sounds as though it unlocks but the door is still latched. with some persistance I can get the door open. I have sprayed it with lubricant but in a day or two the problem reoccurs. Is there a remedy or does the mechanism need replacing?

The good ol' Ford door lock mechanisms get tired after a while and need replacing.
This is a pretty common occurence as the Fords get older. Best to open the panels and replace before you can't get it open at all.

Yes the mechanical lock is shot for it stuck
Replace it or soak it in WD40 first and work with it to see if it frees up for you. If it does add white lithium grease to it all over the moving parts and install

How do I get my rear hatch door open, when you can't open it from the outside?

You can get it open in two ways: By using your key fob and remotely opening latch or by pulling inside panel on rear hatch and manually pulling lever to get latch to release. Most times when you cant get rear hatch to open normally is because cable from outside release handle to latch broke. Have cable and release mechanism inspected and replace worn or broken parts as needed.
