How to change altenator belt on a 1996 mazda protege

At the top of the alt coming out from the engine block is a slotted bracket with a locking adjusting bolt, loosen the small 12mm locking bolt and then loosen the 14mm 4-5in long bolt about 2in out then break free the lower mounting bolt and nut just enough to swing the alt forward (may need a rubber mallet or bar) then remove old belt and replace with OE v-groove belt, then revers steps to tighten belt-no more then half inch finger play when done(do not pry or force new belt onto pulleys)

Need to install a new belt as the old one broke upon starting

The belt routing decal should be attached to underneath the hood or engine cover, it will show you how the belt is routed on the van. If it is the alternator belt that broke, just remove the bolt holding the altenator up on its bracket and then remove the old belt off the pully.

Belt water pump

drain cooling system, lossen but dont remove bolts on waterpump pully ,then remove belt by prying back tensioner, (make a drawing of belt route so you can reinstall when done.) next remove bolts holding pump on, now pump should pull off.clean old gasket off block, now put gasket on pump with a little coat of sealant between pump and gasket, now install new pump, reverse direction to put back together, hope this helps, good luck.

Old version A
- Remove ribbed belt guard.

- Loosen ribbed belt tensioner using 15 mm wrench and drift 3204.

New version B

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

Changing the alternator belt - easy?

Yes, you'll have to use a wrench or socket on the bolt in the center of that tensioner pulley, you'll back off the tension to remove the belt and have to back off the tension again when you install the new belt.

there is a tensioner that you have to move with a wrench. if you remove the passenger side plastic inner fender and rim, it will make it a lot easier. I had the same problem my friends aunts car like that broke a belt and I had to replace it. tell him to look at it from the side and he will see a little piston that pushes on the tensioner bracket and just push in the direction that would compress the piston. it is very stiff though. he will probably be mad at you and toyota by the time he gets the belt off.

It's actually super easy.
All you need is your year and make alternator belt and a wrench.
Take off the existing altenator, take off the old belt.
Once the altenator is off you'll be able to look further down below where the altenator was. You'll see a metal wheel that's a little bigger than the one on the altenator. This is where the new belt needs to wrap around.
I found it alot easier to wrap the belts around the two wheels before putting the altenator back on the engine.
Make sure that all bolts and seals are sound. (that's the last thing you need falling off in the middle of nowhere!)
Hope it helped!
