How to change AC clutch on a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe 6 cylinder

To change an air conditioning compressor clutch, you remove the bolt in the center of the clutch, remove the pressure plate, then remove the snap ring that holds the clutch to the compressor shaft. You may need to remove the a/c compressor to do this which would involve evacuating the a/c system, and recharging after repairs are made. You also may need a set of feeler gauges to set the gap on the new clutch.

97 e350 van no power to compressor clutch, have power to pressure switch , i jumped pressure sw wire still no power to clutch

By the compressor clutch I assume you mean the a/c clutch if so read on:

The air-conditioning system in your Ford is basically a circulation loop through which refrigerant is pumped by a compressor. The refrigerant is a combination of gas and liquid that becomes very cold as it is compressed and then expanded. The chilled gas then flows from the compressor into an evaporator coil. The cold refrigerant now inside the coil has air blowing across the fins and tubes of the coil, thereby cooling the air, which is transferred into the car. By following the procedures below, you can remove and replace the A/C compressor clutch in your Ford vehicle at minimal cost.

Instructions
    • 1

Have the air-conditioning system discharged or evacuated of refrigerant by certified personnel at a dealer service department or automotive air-conditioning repair facility.

    • 2

Raise the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable terminal from the battery using a box-end wrench.

    • 3

Disconnect the electrical plug-in connector from the compressor clutch by hand.

    • 4

Remove the drive serpentine belt from the compressor clutch pulley by taking the tension from the pulley using a breaker bar and compressing the torsion spring tensioner.

    • 5

Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor with the box-end wrenches. Plug the open fittings to prevent the accidental entry of dirt and moisture; quarter-inch rubber stoppers are a good fit for these connections.

    • 6

Loosen the mounting bolts with the box-end wrenches, and remove the bolts from the compressor clutch mounting bracket and lift the clutch out of the vehicle.

    • 7

Pour out the refrigerant oil into a graduated container so you know how much new oil to add to the new compressor.

    • 8

Installation is in the reverse order of removal. Always replace all O-rings with new ones that are specifically made for use with the new R-134a refrigerant. Lubricate the new O-rings with R-134a-compatible refrigerant oil.

    • 9

Evacuate and recharge the system with the proper amount of R-134a refrigerant by the same certified mechanic that discharged the unit before you replaced clutch. Have the mechanic start the engine and let it run for a few minutes; this will let the system stabilize and the compressor cycle on and off.

Rebuild AC Compressor RSX 2004

You can replace the clutch assembly without removing the air condtioning compressor you need to buy the tools to remove the clutch with. Need more information if you are going to tear into this as it can be expensive and I would not open up the system unless you had too.

How do you remove the Air conditioner clutch from a 1997 chevy

Replace the whole compressor. If you don't have the proper tools to replace the clutch with, you will never get it out. The compressors are bad for the front seals leaking on those, and would be best to replace the whole thing.

Intermittent A/C operation

I think your a/c clutch is going. If it works for a while and cuts out, the electrci clutch is getting hot and losing the ability to stay clamped.
Sometimes, you can shim the clutch so it's less of a gap to close. Or, replace the clutch.

2000 ford taurus ac question: air conditoner works for a short time and starts to blow warm air. This is when the temperature reads hot on the temperature gauge. This occurred on a freeway with the outside...

your electric a/c clutch is wearing out. You have to remove compressor to replace the a/c clutch mounted on the compressor.

If you can get someone to shim it out a little bit, it would work ok. Call a few indpenedent shops and ask if they can shim it and how much it would cost.

Just say, I need to have the clutch on my a/c compressor shimmed so my a/c clutch clamps tighter. 2000 Taurus. How much to do that?

I would guess $100 max.

Otherwise, you need to have clutch & field coil assembly replaced. Around $300 - $350.

Here is a picture of the compressor with clutch mounted on front.

1998 Volvo V70 A/C Intermittent

I had exactly the same problem. When your engine is cold and off check the gap on your ac compressor with a feeler gauge, it should be between 0.3 and 0.5mm. If it is larger you need to re-shim which invloves undoing a nut on the end off the compressor and removing the clutch plate, then removing the appropriate shims (look like washers) then replace. The reason it blows warm after 10 minutes or so is because the ac compressor gets hot and the clutch gap gets too large for the electro-magnetic clutch to engage. Some people would say that you need a new compressor but all you need to do is a re-shim.
