SOURCE: Chevy Impala A/C compressor

The compressor will run whenever defrost or blend is selected on the heat control, this is supposed to dry the air and aid in defrosting.

Air conditioner does not start immediately

You may well have a ccot system. Cycling Clutch Orifice Tube. Rather than having a adjustable expansion valve, they use a fixed orifice for an expansion valve, then turn the compressor on and off to maintain correct pressures. This does produce higher fuel mileage. It is not necessary to run the compressor full time to achieve proper cooling.

My ac is leaking freon rapidly in my 2002 impala and i need to fix it. What may be the problem and how extensive is it to fix?? If its the compressor where is it located and how hard is it to replace?

Most A/C leaks are due to worn out seals, and there are seals throughout the entire A/C system. I recommend you have an MVAC certified technician fix your leak and recharge your system. Working on A/C systems can be fatal, and if you don't have the proper equipment and safety devices you should consult a professional.
  1. First, any refrigerant still in the system must be evacuated using the proper evacuation equipment. Releasing refrigerant into the air is illegal, dangerous to breathe in, and damaging to the environment.
  2. In order to find the leak, you will either need a Leak Detector or Leak Detection Dye. The best method is the Leak Detector. The inexpensive method is to use Leak Detection Dye.
  3. Once the leak is found, it will need to be repaired by replacing the bad seals, or the damaged equipment will need to be replaced, e.x. evaporator, compressor, etc.
  4. After the leak is repaired the system will need to be checked for leaks again, but this time with a Vacuum. If it holds the vacuum, the leak is fixed.
  5. The system can now be oiled as needed and charged.

I have a 2002 impala and my A/C keeps blowing hot air. When I put in freeon, it works for a while then the next day, hot again.

theres probably a leak in your lines or compressor. to check, lift your car, put in a new can and check to see if you hear or see any leaks in the lines or compressor
