SOURCE: Timing belt

  • IF your doing your own timing belt, you need to get a Chilton's Repair manual on your particular car, it has the information you need. If you have never done one before, I suggest taking it to a shop, as you can cause severe engine damage if you do NOT get the timing belt on in the correct place.... what can happen is you can cause your engine valves to get bent because you didn't get it timed correctly. This problem happens alot with novices trying to repair timing issues and dont' know what they are doing.

SOURCE: 1998 GALANT W/ 130,000 MI. TIME TO CHANGE THE

Should be on your 2nd timing belt. If you have the 4cyl engine there is a balance belt that needs to be changed also. Mitsubishi recomends replacement at every 60,000 miles, your 10k over. Most of the time these motors are not interferance engines, But I have seen a few that broke a belt at high rpm that did bent valves......

I need to replace the water pump on a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage DE 1.8 liter engine. Must I replace the timing belt at the same time?

No you don't have to, but if it has to be removed to replace the pump, why not be safe then sorry and replace it. They are not expensive and if you break a belt, you could possible get internal engine damage if the motor has interference valves in the engine

How to Install a new Alternator Belt on a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage?

First take off the negative battery cable, facing the back of the car reach UNDER the alternator and loosen the bolt on the bottom right side, now loosen the bolt on the adjuster block on top, you can now turn the adjuster bolt and move the alternator to change the belt. If you need to change the steering pump belt on the front of the motor, you need to loosen the nut on the back side of the pulley it holds the adjuster pulley in place . Then you can use the adjuster belt to move the pulley to adjust the belt.

99 mitsubishi mirage just died as i was driveing. now wont crank, sounds like timing is off. Any suggestions

If the car dies like you flipped a killswitch and wont even try to crank the motor I would definitely lean toward the ignition switch in the steering column is fried. Once it shorts out the car dies and wont crank.
