The timing belt broke

The mechanic in this town said he couldn't fix it, and that I might need to have the engine replaced.

Thank you. I bought the car used so I don't have a warranty and have been panicked since I got this news. But now I feel a little better, knowing what it might be.

He most likely is talking about the valves being bent from the belt breaking, the head has to come off,and the valves replaced, and the guides replaced if they where damaged,he may not can do the work, but try some other shops that are willing to do so.

It still will be costly,it is not cheap, and remember to replace anything in there near the timing components ,water pump included.

Can i replace the timing only?

If the timing belt broke while the engine was running there is likely valve train damage. Bent rods and such. Big repairs. Needs engine rebuilt- don't spend money without a mechanic looking at it.

He timing belt broke. mechanic says replacement wont help because the car has over 200'000 miles on it. he says we need a new engine. do you agree?

Let's see what went on in the mechanic's head...

Timing belt broke. Likely that means your engine also has bent valves, because that's what happens when the timing belt breaks while the engine is running.

At 200k miles, likely the rings are pretty worn. Does it use much oil? How was the compression before the timing belt broke? Low?

At 200k miles, I'd be thinking that once it's open, replace the bearings, too. They're likely worn out.

Yeah, sounds like a replacement engine to me, too... Cheaper than doing everything to rebuild yours.

Timing belt broken

Most likely it is an interference engine. How fast were you going when the belt broke? Had a 2004 Dodge Neon with the 2.0 and the timing belt broke going less than 10 MPH and the engine was fine.

The timing belt broke on my 2000 nissan quest gxe minivan. I was told i need to 1st change the timing belt then do a compression check. The i was told by another mechanic i need to do a LEAK DOWN TEST....

the first thing to do is to replace the timing belt and water pump and timing belt components(the water pump is driven by the timing belt). the chassis has nothing to do with the engine, it is a NISSAN engine that is used in the MERCURY villager that's why FORD is on the chassis. it is however a CLOSE TOLERANCE engine, but very resiliant. the reason for the compression or leak down test is to make sure the valves are not warped and the heads are not damaged. the engine still has to be "timed" correctly or it will not pass a leak down test or compression test. in most cases, unless the engine RPM's were very high(like when you're passing someone)when the belt broke, the valves in these engines do not warp or the heads get damaged. you sound very confused about the situation, so make a few calls to some other shops and get some more prices and recommendations to see which way to go.GOOD LUCK!!!

Timing belt broke is this a low tolorance enging

A 1991 GEO is worth scraping if this is your problem
A water pump is also needed to replace with the belt
It is a rule of thumb for the belt drives the pump as well
Think about selling it to a local kid as his first car that he has to fool with. The monet to fix it is really not worth investing into it
The fuel pump for these cost more than the worth of this car now

Timing belt Broke are valves worped?

Hello momma_green: My name is Roger and I will help you. The 2005 Chevy Aveo 1.6 engine is a interference motor. That means if the timing belt breaks. The valves will be bent. I have one in my shop now that the belt broke on it. Bent all 16 valves and damaged all 4 pistons. This is not a forgiving motor. I wish I could tell you good news but I cant. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Serpentine belt broke and the v belt broke. i

How long did you keep driving the car after the belt broke? The engine is cooled by the water pump, the pump works only with the belt.If the cars engine was hot (normal at 212 degrees) and the belt broke that runs the water pump, and you kept driveing even a short distance you could have overheated the engine. If the knock is a deep solid sound the piston connecting rod bearings spun and the engine needs repaired or replaced. Its sad to say but an engine without a water pump is just like a person trying to live without a heart. If the heart stops the person stops.

Timing Belt Broke. 2002 Volkswagen Passat . Time for a new car?

i would go with the mechanics advice and allow them to fix it. 1200 to 1500 beats spending 4000 on another motor if that one can be saved

Timing belt broke

I've heard that honda engines are made so that if your timing belt does brake theres enough room for them not to hit the valve cover, but hey i could be wrong only way to find out is to take off the valve cover and inspect
