This is a small leak in the evaporative emission control system. Most common cause is a loose or faulty gas cap but not always, Sometimes the check valve in the gas cap doesn't seat properly allowing the gas tank pressure to bleed down. The EVAP system needs to see a positive pressure in the tank.
P0442 is an Evaporative Emission Control System Leak (a small leak)
("EVAP")
This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a
very
small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as
small
as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the
escape
of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by
hoses
to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a
purge
control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors
into the
engine.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
With a P0442,
the most common repair is to:
Typical gas cap left off, left loose, or defective...buy one if gone or defective or tighten it if loose, then like the man said clear the code with a scanner the proper way and drive it see if the code retiurns if not you are done, if it returns follow the steps that the previuos men told you to follow as that is the same correct advise I would have given you as well.
Mopst likely it is a purge valve, but cant rule out the rest...however the purge is a real easy test done in your hand.... pull the vac. hoses off it and shake it...if gas comes out of it the purge is defective and needs a new "Dealership" purge valve part, clear code and retest drive for a few days...no codes ....no problems!!
Happy Motoring!!
GM has extended the normal warranty to 10 years /120,000 miles for 2002 Trailblazers operated in the northeastern states (salt belt) due to leaks developing on the fuel sending unit on top of the fuel tank, triggering p0442 code. This is NOT a recall ,but an extension of the normal warranty. Affected gas tanks may have fuel leaks from the top of the tank when engine is running. If you have already paid for this repair conact GM with your receipt for reimbursement.

The emission pump up motor could be bad as well If you do as Emmsion wiz suggests if the pump does not pressurize the system you may want to check fuse for the emission pressurization pump, it comes on when you start the car and detects low pressure in the fuel tank or evaporative system, but only would need to be checked after you have tried the cap first.
