Assuming this is an Manual, there is an adjustment next to the firewall in the engine compartment. You have to lock the transmission with an object like an ellen on the top of the transmission and then with a very long extension and 13mm socket, loosen the bolt near the fire wall and make very small adjustments to the shifter and then tight the bolt again to see how it goes. This is a trial and error method to get shifter realigned. Once done, remove the ellen from the locking hold in the top of the transmission (and when testing shifting).

My manual, will not go into 1st. or 3 rd. grear

If it grinds when you try to put it in 1st or 3rd, it might be syncros in the transmission. If the shifter just won't go to those positions, I would suspect the linkage needs adjustment. It would be unusual for the linkage to require adjustment unless the car was worked on or otherwise damaged.

Hi i have lost 2nd,4th and reverse gears could you tell me what is wrong i still have 1st,3rd and 5th gears and how i can fix this thanks

The linkage arms inside the gearbox are defective - the only way to fix that is to take out the gearbox from the car, dismantle it completely and replace the linkage arms, a very long and complicated job that can be done only by a repair shop and it will be expensive.

Forward and reverse gears will not engage (engine running ok) 2002

Hi

it sounds like the main linkage is bent under the car, being as 1st would be forward and reverse back it is most likely the same linkage doing both jobs and doing both faults. easy reaopir though cost about £100 tops. if the problem is more serious then it could be a new gearbox you need although I would be tempted to say I never had to do that job on this car but I have seen many bent gear linkages.

Gear shifting problem. We canged the clutch,

well if the clutch is fine and your box is fine.. then its most likely your gear linkage.. these are adjustable... the linkages are also very bad for siezing up...

87Bmw325 that can't find reverse,1st and only getting 2nd @ start

check the linkage for excessive play if the rubbers are worn out replace them and if you can put the car on the hoist disconnect the linkage under , start the car with another person inside the car to depress the clutch , try each gear at a time to isolate the problem whether its from the transmission or the linkage.
