Question about 1996 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

My 1996 dodge ram stalls out when I come to a stop. I have to keep my foot on the gas a little to keep the engine RPM's up enough so it wont stall out. Its got 192K miles on it. The engine is a 5.9l V8 360 Magnum. Automatic transmission. Can anyone tell me what to check please? Thanks

Is this with the AC on or off Or all the time?
When you have it in park does it have a miss or is it okay?
How long has it been since your last tune up?
Without Info I have listed.
A shot in the dark would be an bad high idle solenoid/sensor.

    I never run the AC.
It doesnt seem to have a miss when its in park.
Just replaced the spark plugs about a month ago with Bosch platinums, other than that it hasnt been tuned up.
Do you think it could be the MAF sensor? My dad was just telling me that could be it.

It could be a MAP sensor but I still think it''s your high idle sensor.
Here is why when you are parked it runs good

It could be a MAP sensor but I just don't think so.
Here is why when you are parked it runs good & when you are driving it runs good.
But when you stop in gear it dies.
    So 2 things
#1 it's not idling up to compensate for the pull from the brake booster & the transmission.
And # 2 could be your brake booster if you have a vacuum in or going to it. One sign is if you have the sound of air when you push on the brake. Try this with truck in park push on brake and see how it runs. If it runs good then I would take a look at idle sensor. If not running good get a can of carb. cleaner, WD-40 or starter fluid spray it around vacuum hose going to booster with someone holding foot on the brake if it idles up, replace hose, fitting & grommet. If you don't find anything take it to a Auto parts store like Autozone most of the time they will plug in to your computer for free. It may give you a code they take the code in to the store and put it in there computer. This will give you a reading with part numbers that are bad in your truck.
I would do a filter change air and fuel it may not help the dieing but it will help your MPG.
I hope this INFO helps you. I still think idle sensor

What would cause my Dodge ram to stall when put in reverse and sometime just letting off the gas, or coming to a stop?

wow no year stated, nor engine size, you make this very hard.
stalls are complex.
how to cold engine? we cant guess that.
my wild guess. on why is here.
you need to watch engine RPM.
if rpm/s go too low below 800. say down to 500 that is a clue.
big clue. (means lack of engine power, or ISC is stuck closed or EGR main valve stuck open)
The ECU does every thing it can (ISC) to prevent stalls.
in fact as you select Drive or Reverse from park, the ECU adds throttle. (via is buddy ISC) the ISC adds air. and RPM rises.
The next question answer the reasons.
1: does a fast right foot, save the stall. yes or no?
easy, yes, hard, impossible no.??????????? a key test. and 100% free of charge. and tools. just a right foot.

Error, why not say what produced and error.
(my scan tool or my cluster display)
using a real scan tool youd get more errors, post the codes.
DO not decode them let us do that using the real FSM,

Rev. stall.
that means the ISC failed to add power
and on some engines, (MAF based) a vacuum leak will do that.
so will EGR stuck open (some engines have it ,others not)
what was RPM before you shift to reverse and did you
try to save it with a fast right foot.
there are lots more causes. up to 50.
(eg, leaking intake valves, sticking. on and on)
but first post the engine, ok.

we cant fix engine, with engine not stated, its not going to happen.
well, under 100 pages of tests. blind to engine.

Astro van problem

If the engine RPM drops and does not recover, its usually a faulty idle air control valve. Can you keep your foot on the gas and keep it running when you come to a stop ? Is the check engine light on ?

1996 jeep wont stay started and oil pressure gauge goes up and down

hot or cold engine , or both.?
the oil pressure will be in direct ratio to engine rpm. slow low, fast high
due to the oil pump connection to engine crankshaft.

stalls.: can be caused by 50 things, or just 4 in physics.
the EGR valve (if you have one, no engine stated)
can stick open and stall any engine, and in fact LOVES to. clean it.
1: list 12vdc to EFI. (spark and fuel brain) dash lights dim?
2: lost compression hot, ? compression tests.
3: lost spark, do spark tests. and timing, checks.
4: bad fueling, too much if floods, and misfires and stalls.
too little fuel, it starves and dies.

the 1 free test, is can you save the stall with a fast right foot.

we do the tests. avoiding those 50 guesses....
each tests are simple and the tools dirt cheap .

Car idles low, stalls after start

Common issue at the shop (i'm a ford technician), here is what I do to correct it.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
