Question about Mitsubishi Outlander

1 Answer

I have a Mitsubushi Outland 2003 that the heater quit working about a month ago and today the air was working OK and then the green AC button started to blink , but no AC. Any ideas? Could these two be related?

It sounds like the AC/heater temperature control blend door has malfunctioned, the AC/Heater control in the dash can be tested for fault codes when the light blinks, this will give direction to the problem, the dealer has to do this test, the blend door that changes air temp is the most common cause of this problem, other faults are a leak in the AC system and u are low on charge, go out under the hood and see if the AC compressor on the engine is engaging, or if it kicks on and off quickly which indicates a leak and then the cause is a low charge of refrigerant.

I beleive the Ac is low on R134a since it has been slow to cool down too.

As for the heater the temperature controll knob has been hard to turn since I bought it. But I've never heard the door flap thump when switching back n froth.

I ve also checked the fuses. If the heater air is blocked off should nt there be some hot somewhere? Ive check the coolant and the water temperature guage is always fine.

Fan speed control works on high only

I am experiencing the same problem. I've had two different diagnoses:

1) Blower Motor Control Module/Resistor (under $40)
Dorman Part # 973442
2) AC and Heater Control Switch (Reman. Part: $234 + Core charge of $222.)
DORMAN Part # 599030
(Prices current from

In addition to the recent blower problem, 5 years ago I had the A/C blowing out the floor/defrost vents only, too; but with no vacuum leaks. I was told then I needed the AC/Heater Control Switch; but instead I made it a "manual" automatic climate control. I disconnecting the vacuum connector plug from the control unit and used the male end to make the connections. It was much easier on my pocket book and still works today.

The connections I found on my 2003 Grand Marquis:
Black: Supply
Blue: Panel door
White: Air inlet door
Yellow: Floor/Defrost door
Red: Floor door

The Fix:
I used a vacuum hose directly from Black to Blue and White. This required a short piece of vacuum hose with one T connection. The temp control still works including the fan speed control (until now). I live in Texas and it doesn't get too cold. But occasionally I connected Black to Yellow directly to get me thru those real bad cold spells.
Bottom Line: Not sure what I going to do but leaning towards replacing the Control Switch and the vacuum connector plug. Especially, since the price of the switch is more reasonable today. A 50% savings from 5 years ago.

Pop the hood, start the vehicle and turn the AC on. Watch the compressor, it should have a center that rotates on an off and you should hear a clicking sound. This is the compressor clutch you are looking at. If the compressor is not doing this, check the fuses for the AC. If the fuses are good, then most likely the high side sensor switch is not working, therefore the clutch never engages and the air never gets cold.

Try that and get back to me, ok?
